Gatekeeper vs. Lake Erie winds

Thats seems about right. The wind got intense at times which seem to prompt alot of the coasters to stop operations yesterday. GK went down around 6pm and I believe it was its final run of the day. We left the park at 830 jus before that nasty little storm came thru

Ride computer monitors all of this on it's own apparently. It shuts itself down for this and stacks the trains to unload and doesn't let any others dispatch. They shut down for 30mph sustained, but were getting gusts of up to 45. Also they can run in light rain, but by about the 2130-ish timeframe when it started being a more consistent rain that is when they apparently will shut down. Had a great two hour convo with a friend who was at entrance after the wind closure haha

Theme park review just posted a video on Vine that showed how much speed the ride had lost due to winds in the area. The video showed the train creeping slowly through the inclinded dive loop. Looks like wind will be an issue for this ride.

I managed to get some time to go to the park yesterday. The only reason I went was to ride GK since I couldn't go to Media day or OSU day or else there'd be no way I'd go to the park on opening day. I got there around 6:30pm and knew it was a bad sign when I didn't see GK running. Since that was the reason my mom and I came, we waitied right outside the ride's entrance. We met some nice people and talked for a while. It seemed as if the wind was dying down, but we heard an emplyee saying that at the top of the ride there were still very high gusts. So after a while of waiting it began to rain. Then we waited under the nearby locker tent. It only poured a little but then a light rain continued. The wind even picked up, but a lot of people came over toward GK probably hoping to get one last ride in before the park closed since most of the big rides were down. Shortly before 10pm the rain mostly let up but by then it was cold and very windy. We waited until about 9:55 and things didn't look hopeful. So I ran over to Wicked Twister and was on one of the last trains of the night. It was disappointing we didn't get to go on GK, but I can understand why.

That would make 3 valleyed coasters in the first 2 days of operations... that has to be a record.

Incredible about Millennium and Maverick. It must be incredibly windy at the park today. At least Maverick won't be too hard to get running again. (If it's valleyed in the horseshoe role, they just have to pull it through the one inversion, and then the train can reset at the launch area). MF, on the other hand, may take a while.

Thrills Around the Corner!

Was anyone on Maverick when it valleyed? Or was it like Millennium with some water dummies and/or empty?

Nobody was on either ride as I don't believe any of the big coasters opened for ERT. We were in line for 2 hours before leaving the GK line, which had reached WT and then came back and headed for the midway. The only "major" rides open today were Wicked Twister (opened 1/2 hour late), Max-Air (opened during ERT), Corkscrew, Blue Streak, and Shoot the Rapids. We were told in line that the winds were way above the allowed level on Gatekeeper from an operator, but were not told the exact number. I would like to give a shout out to Kyle on the GK crew. It was awesome to hear how much he loved his job, and how he loved talking to all the guests.

One of my friends works GK...The ride watches all of these variables (quite impressive) and if it trips over 30mph sustained, it'll setup & shut itself down in the brake run. I'm also assuming it'll stop the lift from jogging as well. Last night they were getting above 30-45mph gusts frequently...I heard the weather was even crazier today, so put that into the equation. But yeah this ride's technology is incredible. He even told me the train does a self test & diag. check everytime it comes back into the station, which hence a few delays & stuff when it came back in because it's still working out the kinks...Crazy stuff, and quite impressive. The only thing I had on my ride was block lights & lights for certain brake runs/the lift...Everything else was on us haha...

As for the rides open wow...I remember one day working corkscrew & the winds were crazy and completely cold, it basically floated through the corkscrews...we thought it was ganna valley...today might be that day >_>

This is my second straight year in a row where Opening weekend wasn't that great. Maybe I'm bad luck or something I don't know. Last year, it seemed like the rides weren't ready and were down. This year, everything was ready, but the stupid weather had to come in and make everyone miserable. I'm thinking of skipping opening weekend next year just because of the luck I"m having. :(
