First visit question...Disaster Transport

The wife and I just got back from our first trip to CP ever, it was great. No real complaints except that the mini-golf course is somewhat neglected.

Disaster Transport...I've heard things and I'm sure this has been talked about before here, but without beating the dead horse again about loving or hating it, can anyone tell me what was I supposed to actually see on Disaster Transport assuing that the 3D effects were all in working order?

One other question...does the park run the Gemini with both trains anymore? We were there for 4 days and never saw both the red and blue trains running togather.

Things you're supposed to see on Disaster Transport:

1) lights going up lift hill
2) darkness
3) exit

What was wrong with the Mini Golf Course. And I know I hate how they only run one side a lot on Gemini.

The mini-golf course wasn't the worst I've seen by far. It rained on Monday and flooded some of the holes and covered many with mulch, that happens, can't be avoided.

However by Wednesday no one had made any effort to clean up the greens. The woman at the booth warned us the course was still a mess, but we needed 30 minutes to kill before starlight admission (we'd been in Soak City all day). She let us do both the red and blue courses for the price of one.

I just thought I would post this Disaster Transport RCT3 recreation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLnhr6AIC2Y

It's really cool.

^haha that is really cool. At first I thought it was going to be a joke. But I liked it. My recreation would just be the queue line, and then 1 minute of just pure darkness haha

And there in lies the problem.

Ive been going to CP for over 2 decades, and I dont even know how to describe the garbage they have in there now, except by giving them the tale of how CP has let it get worse every year.

Frankly, it looked its best as Avalanche Run.

^ - haven't seen this video, but that rule also only applies to video taken after no-video rule was put in place by the park.

For reference, see the Gemini thread from last week (maybe week before). There was Gemini on-ride that was taken back in 79 or 80. It is ok because it was taken before the no-video rule went into place.

As a follow-up, does anyone know WHEN they implemented that rule? I would guess late 80's early 90's when hand held VHS cameras came into widespread use.

I saw this related link that shows some of how the ride looked earlier.

That's how it looks now.

About Gemini... Yes, the park does still run both sides, but depending on attendance they may be running one side. Additionally, on most days, only one side runs until noon or 1 o'clock or so.

When i just recently went they had both sides running.it was like 15 minutes to closing.

The sad thing is that Cpboy's recreation on RCT3 is actually 10 times better than the real thing.

And yes, that youtube showing actual footage is WELL into "the crappy years".

^^ - and that would put it into the "No on-ride video" era as well.

Quick question. When were the good years? I didn't like the ride when it first opened and I don't like it now...

Avalanche Run my friend.

It was actually pretty cool. Each sled was themed as a different country, and people would time each others runs and try to break records. People is your car would even yell out "to the left" and "to the right" to lean to get the car up on the track higher. It was, as I remember, just a fun, unique ride.

Now it is, in a word, poop.

It's not even 3-D really, it's just those cheap spectrum glasses they give out for fireworks shows. I have about 30 of them at home! Other then that the only reason to even think about Disaster Transport is that the line has A/C.

"Thirsty for Chicken?"

That video does appear to be a no-no...you can see the camera being hidden just as the operator is walking up. My ride on the thing was pitch black the whole way, most of the lift lights were burned out, and the queue line was almost pitch black.

Oh well, the rest of the park stay more than makes up for it. This was by far the best amusement park trip I've had in years, I just wish I had gone sooner after seeing the TV news blurb about the Millenium Force opening way back. I think I got more rides at CP in one day then I did in 4 combined trips to King's Dominion over the years, standing in those long hellish queue lines in the VA humidity.

The wife is now a die-hard Millienium Force fan. We're definitely coming back in 2008.

I wonder if some type of flight simulator would be a hit at Cedar Point. I certainly would ride it. Unfortunately, due to the size of most simulators, ridership numbers wouldn't be that high. Perhaps, they could charge $3 to $5. Anyone else think that would be cool idea. I've got the perfect location for it, too. The old aquatic stadium.
