Final Weekend for Glass Blowing Exhibitions

Before the power failure yesterday, I was talking to Rikki, the last remaining glass blower (the other two blowers were fired).

I may be the only geek on this board that enjoys the glass blowing shows, but I want to spread the word to any other fans: Saturday & Sunday will be the final shows this year before Rikki heads back to BGSU. She'll be performing from Noon until 8:00PM both days. I think it's a show worth catching.

Too bad I won't be able to go see the show. :( I enjoyed it whenever I went to CP and even thought about getting a job doing that. How come two workers were fired? Are they going to have the glass blowing show next year or is this it?

It is best not to discuss personnel issues in a public forum, just for the privacy of all those involved.

I know nothing about the people involved, but I do know the dirty little secret that it is normal at the end of the season for a lot of people to be fired or to be encouraged to quit before their contracts expire. Or at least that's what I have heard.

Regarding the glass-blowing show, it's worth noting that Cedar Point is the only park where I have ever seen glass blowers actually blowing glass. In most parks I've seen glass artists sculpting rods of glass into delicate ornaments, but I've never seen actual glass blowing except at CP.

RideMan,

From what Rikki told me (& who would know better than a co-worker) the two were fired for a good reason.

Rikki said she may return next year. Although the pay is $8 an hour, it's great to have the use of the equiptment and all the glass you can blow. For her to practice her craft on her own, that can be very expensive.

Rideman: there's more truth to be told about that....I worked there last year and under the cirumstances of why I left, it was most interesting....to put it this way: many bonuses are kept each year and not mailed.

Come on Dave, you're better than "believing" everything the seasonals tell you. CP DOES NOT BONUS HUNT...The "problems" arise when a seasonal heads toward the end of his or her contract with a clean slate and thinks to him/herself, "Hey I can screw up what are they going to do fire me?" Well YES they will.

The rules are spelled out in black and white at the start of the season. One of the charms of CP is the QUALITY of employees from day one till the end of the season. CP EXPECTS their employees to respect the rules from day one until the end of their contract. CP wants each guests' visit to be the best possible no matter if they come on the first day of the season or the last day.

CP has budgeted the bonus monies well in advance of the season. A few "firings" are not going to help CP cut budget.

It is real simple. If you agree to work at the park, agree to follow the rules EVERYDAY, until you are done.

Any "bonuses" kept and NOT mailed are at the fault of the seaonal employee, NOT CP.

Who is happy to report he received his bonus each and every summer of employment.

I can tell you that 'Bonus Hunting' is quite alive and well in the carnival industry!
