Duplicate pictures without negatives?

I know a lot of you guys are photo buffs, so let me ask you this...

I have several CP pics from family vacations of years past, and would like to put together a collage for my mom for her b-day.

The problem is, I don't have the negatives, AND I want to keep the pictures for myself. What's the best way to get copies made without negatives? I presume that it's not your standard desk color copier, nor is it a scanner and photographic paper. I want something of archival quality.

I've done this myself with a very old (turn of the century) photo that I wanted enlarged. I just phoned a couple professional photo labs (they all could do this, so I picked the one closest to me) where they (and I'm not sure of the exact process) took a new neg of the old photo; after that, you can do whatever you want, since you have the neg. In my case, the quality of the new print (and we're talking a fair enlargement, which will lose detail) was outstanding. So it should be pretty easy for you to do the same.

Actually, you can get prints from prints a lot of places these days. When I lived in Chicago, I know our local Walgreens would advertise this. Also, here in DC, I have seen machines in camera stores where you can scan a print and it makes a true copy of it. It a pretty common practice. Just call around to the places where you usually get your film developed and ask if they do "Prints from prints"

Kodak has these scanners that produce actual digital prints. They have these stations in Wal-marts and K-marts and such. You simply put your print in and choose a size and it scans the original photo and makes a digital print that is very good in quality. (as long as your original is of good quality.)
