Draw Cedar Point's Next Coaster

heric's avatar

Hi all,

Inspired by a thread I saw prior to the Valravn announcement (Draw Your 2016 Predictions!) I thought it would be fun to continue the trend this off-season. Let’s see what interesting/creative ideas everyone can come up with regarding the next future coaster at Cedar Point.

To get the ball rolling - I'll start. Utilizing Bird's eye view in Bing Maps, Windows Snipping Tool and Paint I drafted this concept. I'm sure others can do better; I am nowhere near an artist.

Coaster
- Name: Apex
- Height: 460-500'
- Type: B&M hyper coaster
- Colors: White track with black supports, bright colored trains

Necessary Requirements for Space
- Removal of Mean Streak
- Removal of parking lot
- Removal of Challenge Park (Move Ripcord/Skyscraper inside park. Utilize half the footprint for new coaster, other half for soak city expansion)

Theme & Concept
In 1979 Cedar Point set the world record for the tallest roller coaster at 125ft with Gemini. In 1989 Cedar Point again broke that record with Magnum XL-200 sending riders for the first time above 200ft. In 2000 pushing forward, Cedar Point announced Millennium Force ushering in a new era of the ‘giga-coaster.’ Striving even further and setting new boundaries of what was possible – in 2003 Cedar Point unleashed Top Thrill Dragster shattering the record once again of the World’s Tallest Roller Coaster. Now, to celebrate Cedar Point's 150 year, Cedar Point is bringing that title back to Ohio. Announcing Apex - The Tallest Roller Coaster in the World

Apex will be themed after mountaineering. Riding/concurring Apex (the tallest coaster in the world) will be conceptualized as summiting Mount Everest (the tallest mountain in the world) though ‘Everest’ will not be directly referenced due to licensing. White track with black supports will visualize the tall snowy mountain riders are to climb in their bright colored ‘winter-gear’ trains before they embark on their record breaking descent. Queue lines/station will also contain snow/mountain climbing elements.

Marketing Hurdle
Yes the polar coaster in Florida upon completion will be taller but I would leave it up to the legal and marketing teams for marketing Apex as the tallest coaster in the world. I view it as a similar situation to when Millennium Force debuted but Superman at Magic Mountain was taller. It would be an argument of a polar coaster being a ‘true roller coaster.’

Closing
The idea came from someone recently referencing that a 300+ roller coaster was in concept for the back of the park. (something from the Dick Kinzel book maybe?). I am not an engineer so I do not know the feasibility of this design in the foot print I chose or B&M’s capability to get to 460+ feet so please note that this is more for fun. Excited to see everyone’s visualizations and creativity!

i foresee them RMCing MS next. With Cedar Fair's B&M kick, I could see them installing a launched flyer after RMCing MS. As for a 400' "traditional" coaster; I think it will be a long time before we ever see that anywhere. For CP to get to the 500'-600' mark, i see a polercoaster before anything else.

I could see the RMC treatment as well which I think would be well received. I travel to Cedar Point once a year with a diverse group of family/friends ranging from my 64 year old father to my 5 year old nephew. Mean Streak in its current state is a 'once and done' for us because of rider comfort level. This is even with defensive riding by selecting the front of the train and leaning forward for the duration of the ride. I have read that RMC is well booked at the moment so idea on a feasible timeline.

I think a launched flyer would be amazing in the Iron Dragon footprint however you would be knocking out another 'starter' coaster. The ride is plagued with mechanical issues though and the coaster type is disappearing. I would love to see a coaster with a 42" requirement some where in the park as well. My one nephew was just shy of 48" and could only ride Woodstock Express, Pipe Scream and Shoot the Rapids this past summer.

And lastly yeah - I do not know how close we are to a 400' traditional coaster. My bias is apparent and I would love for it to be at Cedar Point :)

I didn't know where else to put this but I was wondering wether people have been paying attention to the construction of the Flying Dinosaur at Universal Studios Japan. I'm not a fan of flyers but I would have absolutely no problem if Cedar Point's next coaster was an unthemed clone of that coaster. It looks that good. I'm not saying that I wouldn't want a custom layout but I wouldn't complain either way.

They could clone it, but it would need to be "bigger" ;)

There are several rides that CP needs before installing something as lame as a flyer, in my opinion.

Lame is the last thing that comes to mind when I see that coaster, but I do agree there are other coasters they should get first. I was just saying I wouldnt complain.

There are other attractions needed before more coasters.

To be fair, this topic is about the next "coaster" so there's that...

What are using as a basis to call flyers lame?

Cool Thread! I was the one that started the draw 2016 prediction thread, so thanks :)

I'll be posting my idea soon as I love drawing speculations

Coaster
- Name: Sasquatch/Windigo (Fits current theme of mythological creatures)
- Height: 250-275 ft
- Type: RMC
- Colors: Wood/brown... maybe a color on the rail itself. Gray?

*The sketch of the coaster itself is not very accurate and does not detail all elements that it could possibly have

Necessary Requirements for Space
- Removal of Mean Streak
- Removal of small RV Parking Lot
- Small maintenance buildings infront of main Planning & Design Building

Other Additions:

- New Maintenance building (To compensate for removal of some)

-New Eateries/Gift Shops

-New Midway connecting Gemini Midway to present Mean Streak midway

-On Ride Photo Building

Theme & Concept

The RMC would not be modifying the existing Mean Streak. It would be a completely new coaster with possible recycled wood from it.

Theming reflecting the nearby cabins and camp-like feel of the area. Could possibly represent a mountainous type adventure like listed above. Station and surrounding buildings themed like log cabins with wood lanterns all around the area. Could tie the train and train station into it as well, acting like a drop off to the "campsite"

At the station a video can play acting like you are camping within your cabin on a dark rainy night. Suddenly you hear and see a big creature standing out your window. It begins to scratch at the walls of the cabin (station) and when it does, the train departs the station rapidly and begins going up the lift hill. As you make it up the lift hill, the sounds intensify and suspenseful music plays as well as stronger sounds from the creature. As you crest the top of the hill, you hear the howl of the creature (Possible sounds below). Once you return to the station, you find yourself at what seems to be a safe 'new' cabin aka you survived running away from the creature.

Closing:

I know CP doesn't exactly "love" theming rides, but I feel like this would be a really good concept for the area. I believe it's similar to what they were trying to go for with Rougarou, but we all kind of know how that went. I think Cedar Point would greatly benefit from having an RMC/hybrid coaster as that seems like the most recent trend among parks. CP brags about having a ton of different type of coasters, and this would be just one way to add a new type to the line up.

Excellent concept. I think the new midway proposal is absolutely necessary as Mean Streak has that odd dead-end feeling like the Blue Streak midway did before Valravn. I also think the theming would fit well for that area of the park. I would be happy to see this as the next addition.

Flyers aren't lame, most of the layouts are uninspired. Go ride Tatsu and tell me flyers are lame.

I honestly wouldn't like if the next coaster is a flyer. That's been on the wish list for years. There are many other better concepts out there, and going back to adding a flyer is not appealing to me. And yes, I've been on Tatsu and Superman (SFGAdv). Very slow loading and unloading process for a park like Cedar Point

CoasterKyle1121's avatar

Yes. Very very very slow loading/unloading. Granted, I've only been on Firehawk at Kings Island but it was so awful. Curious however, how many other good concepts are there that would fit the park besides a flyer, GCI/RMC?

1999: First visit
Halloweekends- Harvest Fear, Tombstone Terror-Tory
Ride Operations- Professor Delbert’s Frontier Fling

Because the park goes for grandeur, a GCI is probably a long shot, but RMC is a worthy candidate.

Tatsu's capacity is listed as 1,600 pph which is higher than Valravn. And CP could obviously do it better than Six Flags.

It's slower, but not painfully slow. With such a diverse group of rides and pretty steady attendance, they don't really need to buy the people eaters they once did.

Not a coaster, but fitting with the challenge park removal rumors we've been hearing.
