What a great idea! Nightly movies at the beach and Soak City is an awesome way to add value for passholders without a tremendous investment in new facilities. I'm legitimately excited and laud whoever hatched this idea for being responsive and thinking outside the box. I'll be in the wave pool and at the beach several nights in July and August!

Probably the same people that thought it was a really good idea last year too. Glad they are expanding it.

On a related note, I'll be attending a Dive-In movie showing of Jurassic World Friday night with my daughter at Wildwater Kingdom. It'll be my first such event, so I'm keen to experience it.

I'm glad they're doing the Dive-in thing. My kids have always bugged me about the Wildwater Kingdom ones and I would just really prefer to drive home from Cedar Point really late than from Wildwater Kingdom. I can do the Cedar Point drive almost in my sleep, through Cleveland not so much.
I'd like to see Dead Calm, Cape Fear (for adults---let the kids loose in the park!). Family films could include Pirates of the Caribbean and Jaws. Neat idea, may cut down wait times in the park?!! I'm hoping!!

Something to keep an eye on for anyone hoping to catch Star Wars as a dive-in tonight. I'm keeping my fingers crossed...still planning on going at this point a lot can change. The timing of the storm or direction probably won't be really clear until later.

I went to my first dive-in movie the other week at WIldwater Kingdom. Ava and I went to see Jurassic World. I was fairly disappointed in the size of the screen, given the number of people attending. Fortunately the speakers were loud enough. What really struck me was just how uncomfortable it is to attempt to watch a full length film in a swimming pool. Perhaps if we'd been floating on inner tubes it would have worked better, but given how cold the evening air was getting this was out of the question.
Don't think I need to do it any time soon.

We saw Star Wars The Force Awakens at Soak City I thought the screen there was a bit wimpy too. I didn't expect drive-in size but I expected something bigger than what they used. I was shivering by the end of the movie and I'd say over three fourths of the people there left before the movie ended. The rest of this years line up isn't so great so I don't expect to do it again unless they continue it through next season. I'm glad we went though. If they do it next year with more stuff we want to see I would probably go again.
How exactly can they show random movies like that in public without violating some law or licensing?

They probably buy a license similar to what schools get. At one of the elementary schools I worked at the license was posted in the workroom by the mailboxes. A fixed royalty amount gets paid to major distributors and you play whatever you want.
Both my college and my church have played movies on their large screens. You just have to fill out the paper work and pay the license fee.
Chicago Park District does Movies In The Park each summer. The Grant Park Film Festival gets a fancy screen in the Pritzker Pavilion, other city parks get smaller portable screens. Movies range from recent films like The Force Awakens to Ferris Beuller's Day Off* to Casablanca. I feel safe in assuming they're not renting DVDs from Redbox.
*Set in Chicago; the movie gets a lot of local love

Even if they were if they bought the blanket license thingy it would all be good. Of course why rent it when you can check it out of the library ;)
I'd like to see the movie "The Sandlot" played for the Dive In movies...love it! It's great for the summertime!

We went to the Star Wars showing at Soak City. I think the idea is good but it didn't live up to my expectations. My biggest complaint has to be the sound. We weren't even half way back and could barely hear anything which made it difficult to get into the movie. We also got cold towards the second half and wish we could have been able to get out of the water, dry off, and still been able to sit somewhere dry to finish the movie but there wasn't anywhere available.
