Disaster Transport Theme Changed

Add some disco balls, some strobe lights.....crank some good ole rock and roll music, and re-name it! Problem solved...pretty cheap!

Since the blog is gone I cant look up this answer, but what does the 12E stand for again?

Let's Get Weird.

it was the 12th building a guy with the name of E designed, it was something like eric... or some other e name.

^Where does it say the new information about DT on the website?

I looked and it still describes it being space themed, or whatever the site with the old graphic design said.

It doesnt seem like they can do much with the theming, maybe they just took out the blacklights, so you wait in line where it's pitch black and as you move up in line, you bump into everyone! :)

Besides, the rides trough area is almost completely dark anyway. So it still is a "roller coaster in the dark."

I cracked up when I rode it last Sunday and saw the Domo doll in the space rocks. It made my day. :)

DT is just a big conundrum to me, Why spend 4 million to build a building around a perfectly good bobsled coaster when half the fun of a bobsled coaster is seeing the free movement it has going down the shoot, there are very few coasters like this. seems to me they spent a lot of money to theme this ride just to let it go with in a couple of years! I understand they lost the soundtrack and burned up the projection's but sound can easily be recorded again, both sound and projections can be done digitally for fairly cheap. We all know when they decide to turn them on the lights still work and look good! to why abandon that investment (though I be leave it was wasted) just to let it rot in a hot leaky building.

My suggestion, though it doesn't matter uncover DT call it Avalanche run again, that alone is all the theme you need, and a great starter coaster. Take the lights effects and maybe even some of the props and use them to create a new thrilling modern dark ride!

Solution to the confusing theme elements: Add a host to each DT ride vehicle and some anamatronics to narrate the ride.

"Hi, this is Space Captain Steve! As we begin our trip to Alaska, let's call on Space Trapper Joe."

STJ <somewhat garbled>: "Best be on the lookout for defense satellites. Also, them Space Pirates is on the warpath!"

Just say no to trims

When I was there this past weekend, I waited in a short line for DT, because it was the only place to get out of the freaking cold wind. I did notice that the overhead conveyor thingee was not doing it's normal one-foot-per-minute movement, but was turned off. No worries though, because the 1980's General motors assembly robots were still hard at work.

I agree this ride should be fixed or torn down. It's almost as bad as the peeing babies at the end of Happy Jacks.

This is something that has always nagged at me. I wonder how many of the guests on this coaster never realize that they're not connected to a fixed track. I've never been on any other bobsled coasters, but I would think that this aspect, combined with the height, would create a more thrilling experience than what we have now.

The path you tread is narrow, and the drop is sheer and very high.

I don't understand how so many people think taking the building down will improve this coaster. The building/theming was put up because the coasters ride numbers were way down at that point in time. Now taking the building down might decrease those numbers again if the general public actually knew what they were riding on. DT seems to always have a line in the summer, so it must get decent numbers. I am under the impression most people ride because they don't know what it is.

Unfortunately, I waited 2 hours for this contraption when it was first built as Avalanche Run. Plus another like 1 1/2 hour when it was turned into DT. I admit the ride was better with all the theme elemnets working than it is now. But, I agree with most people on this site that 12E building just looks atrocious next to the lake. That area has potentuial with or without the actual coaster. or building being there.

DT is an awesome and somewhat unique ride. There aren't many bobsled coasters out there I don't think, so they should preserve the ride. If they were to get rid of it I would be very disappointed. There was a ride like it at Opry Land called The Screamin' Delta Demon, and it was awesome. I agree that the building should be taken down though, seeing the sled track makes it more fun/attractive.

If I wasn't a Cedar Point regular, and if I didn't know the history of the ride, I would be so confused on what the ride's theme was! I mean, you walk in through an emergency exit, then you have the "Repair Bay" with flashing lights and rundown scenery. Then, you walk up these random blue stairs with absolutely no themeing. Afterward, you get loaded into your seat in this purple light, and go extremely slowly up a hill with dizzying rope lights, plunge into compete darkness, circle around some random claw looking thing, more complete darkness, and then fly past a few random mountains with a Domo doll propped in them, and then back to purple land to get unloaded. I won't be able to tell if the ride was just really crappy and worn down, or whoever created the ride and themeing was crazy...

I think they should either:

1.) Fix the ride correctly to make it an actual space adventure
2.) Change all the themeing to make it an actual dark ride
3.) Tear the thing down and build a new, better "Disaster Transport 2.0" That has good appeal from the inside AND the outside... And maybe save the iconic "12-E" section of the old building and place it on the new building. :) Just a thought

I know this thread is old, but I have to agree with this. I did my yearly trip to Cedar Point this past week and Disaster Transport is always part of our routine. As usual, no different from any other year, more stuff wasn't working - now I guess you don't even go into Alaska anymore? As that section is completely black.

Cedar Point needs to crap or get off the pot. This ride has SO much potential - however, it could also be tore down and have something else awesome put in it's place that might take advantage of the beach and lake view. I'm a fan of the ride, but either way, I'd be happy. It's almost painful to have to see it "suffer" another year. Either pump some money into this ride and refurb and upgrade it 100% or get rid of it. The entrance to that ride alone is a joke anymore. I'm really rooting for Disaster Transport 2.0 though. It could be the dark ride everyone wants, but still be a coaster.

^ They could prob do that to it, but then all the new theme would just deteriorate after like 3 years, then the cycle would start all over again, like back in the early 90's when they gave it a space theme.

Ugh! I remember waiting in line for that thing for an hour and a half the day it opened (wow I'm showing my age!) and being so disappointed! Then again, i was in my early teens and a big thrill seeker. Avalanche Run was my favorite of the two.

I'm hopeful with Mr. Ouimet in charge, theming upkeep will no longer be relegated to the 'optional, if the whim takes us' category.

No, no it couldn't. It was never the Space Mountain it was first intended to be, nor could it ever be. The dark ride everyone wants is not a coaster; the dark ride everyone wants is more Pirate Ride than Avalanche Run.

You have a coast. You have covered up a significant portion of that coast with an ugly, ugly strange looking warehouse that encloses a ride that is simply embarrassing.

Kinzel's first move was creating DT. I hope Ouimet's first move is erasing it.

And I respectfully disagree. I think it could be :)

A coaster in the dark is not a dark ride. Dark rides are a specific category of amusement ride, and are not coasters. Just because a coaster is indoors and has some themed story to it, does not make it a dark ride.

Ok, well excuse me, it wont be the dark ride "everyone" wants, it would be the dark ride I'd like. I don't think we're ever going to see the dark ride that everyone is wanting at Cedar Point, so I just think this would be the closest thing. That's all I was saying - not trying to redefine what a dark ride is. Please don't attack me saying what's right and wrong, it's just my opinion.

Hopefully, given that there's new leadership at the helm, you'll see previously-unexpected moves by Cedar Fair parks.
