disappointed

Why is everyone so touchy on this message board? Man. It feels like it's a dictatorship or something. When posting, you can't take the slightest tangent away from the topic of Cedar Point, even tho the park has been closed for 3 months now and will be for the next 3 months. What do you expect people to talk about for 6 months? Construction photos? Also, as soon as someone says something that the masses don't agree with, or don't want to hear, the thread gets closed or something. In fact, I bet this thread will get closed, or deleted or something. Why are a lot of the people here so critical, too. My goodness, none of us are perfect. You don't have to get all nasty when someone leaves out a semicolon or quotes the Magnum's height as 203 feet instead of whatever it is in their messages. I guess what I'm trying to say is, let's try and chill. *** This post was edited by RockDown2G on 2/1/00. ***
Right on brother........
This stuff happens on all the message boards. I have lurked in many a forum from PC's to Audio, and believe me, if you think this is anywhere near bad---I won't even post at any of those other sites. They are just one big flame war.
Let me just put it to you like this: In life you can disagree in two different ways. One way to say it is: I hate you; you are so ignorant; you are just so wrong...(This is the wrong, disrespectful way.) The other way to say it is: Well, so and so, I can see your point of view, but I also believe that this and that may more greatly benefit the yadda yadda. (This of course is the tactful and polite way to disagree with someone but still show that you respect their opinions.) As far as talking about other things, if you feel the necessity to add a few superfluos details here and there, I don't think Jeff will mind as it helps to show our individual character since we can't talk face to face. Just don't over do it, though, and go off topic on a tangent about what your favorite pizza topping is (Mine is pepperoni ;) ) when the thread was about your favorite water fountain. if you need to have a friendship with a fellow Cedar pointer, by all means, email them.

I hope this helps.

I've been scared more than my fair share of times on this site as well- and I don't even post that much. However, I know that Jeff runs a professional site here. If you want to engage in relatively intelligent CP conversation, then this is the place for you. If you want to talk about how big the "confirmed" floorless coaster is going to be, or why you hate Disaster Transport so much, or any of the other beaten into the ground topics, then find one of those geocities web pages devoted to Cedar Point that features their own message board. The conversation level there may be a bit more to your liking. Comparing sites like that to this or URC is like comparing CP to SFMM (oh yeah- that's another bad topic!!!)

Spelling errors will happen- and trust me, you'll know when you've made one thanks to the friendly spelling police around here. Everyone makes a mistake now and then. Don't let that discourage you, though. I felt the same way for a while, but I realized that everyone here likes the same thing and one can learn a LOT from some of the knowledgeable posters (and Jeff himself).

So I guess what I'm trying to say (I tend to ramble a lot!) is if you want to say something, please make it a worthwhile addition that the other members will relate to and enjoy. And make sure you do a little proofreading before you post it!

Rockdown: I'm sorry you feel you let down by this discussion board, but allow me to comment.

Regarding keeping things on-topic: This is a forum about Cedar Point. There are literally thousands of forums available on the Internet, covering anything you can possibly imagine. I'm nutty about sticking to Cedar Point discussion because that's what people come here for. Comparable general coaster discussion can be had at ultimaterollercoaster.com or coasterbuzz.com (shameless plug). Discussion on yet other things can be found elsewhere.

There will always be disagreements, and you have to accept that people will disagree. However, threads get closed only when they get off-topic, flame wars begin, or the first post is incomprehensible (in which case it will probably get deleted). Rumors that border on the absurd are also candidates for closing. It's OK to disagree, that's what people do.

Regarding spelling and grammar, yes, we all make mistakes. That's not the issue. However, if you post something that lacks a period after fifteen lines, or capitalization is lacking and abbreviation runs rampant ("y r u lame"), I'm going to take issue with it. The Internet is one of the most powerful means of communication we have, and I'm not going to allow my corner of it to be reduced to a forum of illiteracy. It's too hard to read, and it chases away the people who make some of the most meaningful contributions. A quick once-over before you press submit is not hard.

As Dave said, I think we tend to be fairly civil here. Recent threads on defunct rides, lodging questions and the like have been some of the best we've ever had.

I'm not shy about telling people that this forum is one of the most active on the Net when it comes to coasters and amusement parks, and it only concerns ONE park. That's no accident. It takes a great deal of careful moderation to maintain an atmosphere that keeps people coming back. Is it perfect? Of course not,??? ??? ????? ?? ??? ??? ?????????? ????? ????? ????? ?? ?????????? ???? ???? ???? ???? ????? ?? ???? ?? ????? ?? ?? ?????????? ????? ?????????? ?? ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ?? ??? ?????
This is one of the best boards I've seen. It is dedicated to Cedar Point, and the people here are very passionate about it sometimes, but, hey, it's called "CP Place"! I love IOA, but I don't talk about it here. And the fact we don't have to deal with idiot posts like "roller coaster suck" (who remembers that from RRC?) is what makes CP Place a class act.
I think this is a great site as well, but I do agree that sometimes people here do get a little touchy. I too at one time was afraid to post any of my opinions because of that. (It took me about 2 months beofre I signed up) Anyway, like I said before, this is a great board, but I think to put it in simple terms alot of us just need to relaxe. Mistakes will happpen, people will get off topic, but its not the end of the world! (just the end of that thread) OK Im done now!!
I somewhat agree with RockDown. I posted that I had pictures of MF's cars and that I didn't want to put them online and people jumped all over me saying that I shouldn't talk the talk if I can't walk the walk. And that really ticked me off! So in other words they were saying that I was making it up, but as soon as the pictures came in the got to see that I did have pictures. So, in this case they were that should have keeped their mouths shut. Some people here shoudn't say anything unless they know for a fact that a person is lying.

You don't have to tell people to keep their mouths shut... that's hostility we don't need.

Rockdown - sorry if I have offended you personally, but as Jeff maintains, incomprehensible text seriously lowers the quality of a bulletin board, like it or not. How people present themselves reflects directly on the moderator/webmaster/whomever and how they feel about their site. Sure a spelling error from time to time is OK (as Jeff stated), but as an example, look at the thread titled "big rollercoaster" that is now closed. Obviously, it's a clear example of someone starting a thread just because they can, and are too lazy to proof read what they just wrote (or respond, for that matter). There are so many garbage BB's out on the net, and I personally think it's great that high standards here adhered to and enforced here. It shows that the moderator is actually concerned with the finished product (as it were).

Jeff - I agree 100%.

Coester - I don't want to stray off topic or get into a shouting match, but this is something completely different. Getting on one's case about BB etiquette is one thing - substantiating a rumor (even if it was true, in your case) is another. Bottom line - the proof is in the pudding. Anyone can start a rumor at one of the countless websites dedicated to these sort of things - but in the "point and click" society, where you don't hear a voice, see a face, or evaluate an expression - you have to MAKE
yourself credible (even if you are) with proof. Sad - but true.

If I told you that I've sat in one of the MF cars, would you believe me? If yes - that's how rumors get started.

Guide to the Point 1 is really good value...
I'm afraid when i post that i will get insulted by Jeff like he did in the past so i usually just read instead of post. Many of you might remember me and how I felt stupid about the name change thing and some people insulted me and i felt really bad. I never saw anything that was a problem. I just wanted to say something so PLEASE don't make me feel stupid.

OK, sorry. Seems like it came off a little stronger than I intended. I completely realize that this is a CP message board. That's why I come here. When I said tangents I didn't mean way out in left field like pizza toppings. I meant something along the lines of mentioning another coaster or park when the thought of it originated from something concerning CP. Obviously, there should and must be a limit to how far people can ramble away from the topic, but it's just sometimes it seems like some want to put blinders on to the rest of the amusement park industry. About the punctuation deal, I guess it kinda hit personally because I know people who have grammar/spelling problems and it's discouraging to them to write it as it is for us to read it. If you're concerned about maintaining an image, that's cool. I agree , 100%. If it's jibberish, just close the string. Doesn't have to be an issue of making fun. Just seems kinda wrong to me, we don't know of that person has problems, issues, or is just a younger fan. Heck, I'm only 17 and I feel like a rookie :). I just want to apologize, I'm not at all disappointed with this forum or anyone participating in it. It's just the reactions that some people make sometimes come off as unecessary, and that does disappoint me. Oh well. Sorry again and I'm the first to admit that this string could probably use a hack :)!

Hey of course people will be a little touchy. I mean come on, it's been 3 months+ since most of us have ridden a roller coaster. It's so depressing that we have to wait another 3 months.
Just thought I would say a little something about this. I feel that CP Place is a great forum, one of the reasons being it stays on topic. It is very hard to stay on topic all of the time (I'm a culprit sometimes) but if Jeff or whoever else did not close threads to keep us on topic then we would be talking about whatever we wanted and no one would want to come back. Also I think that no one really gets flamed here. People are generally nice and sometimes they are just joking around and some of us tend to take it too seriously. Well I'm done now and I have to say your prediction on closing this topic was a little off..

Time to chime in with my $0.02...

Rockdown wrote:

This is not entirely true here. Though the website is called "Guide to the Point" and therefore, the highlights of all of the discussions are (and should be) related to Cedar Point in some way, shape or form.

Take for instance, a few months back, there was a lot of discussion about Six Flags Ohio. Why was this discussed here? Because we are talking about direct competition to Cedar Point, and how the developments of the park might affect Cedar Point's popularity, attendance, etc... Even today, I read over in the Millennium Force forum, there was reference made to a rollercoaster "Shivering Timbers." This reference was made to describe what the airtime might be like for Millennium Force. I think it's ok to bring up other parks in discussion, as long as it is related to Cedar Point in some way, shape or form. Just DON'T bring up a topic like "Park X is better than Cedar Point because..." -or- "Park Z is really a great park..."

If you want to talk about parks other than Cedar Point, I suggest you hop on over to GTTP's sister site Coaster Buzz (coasterbuzz.com - *another shameless plug*) and talk your little heart out about your other favorite park.

As far as the spelling issues, hey, nobody is perfect, but there is a lack of common sense out there. And Jeff is right on about how powerful the Internet is as a communications tool. I know if I read message boards where there are constant spelling errors, run-on sentences, and general rambling, the chances of me coming back to that site are very slim.

And as for the flaming... Completely unacceptable! It really disturbs me when I open up a forum, and find one person in there, just flat out flame someone, and tell them to bite something, or eat dirt. If you disagree with what??? ?????? ??? ????? ??? ????????? ???? ???????? ?? ?? ???????????? ??? ?????????? ???? ?? ?? ???? ???????? ?? ????? ??????? ?? ???? ?? ?? ??? ????? ?? ?? ?? ???????????? ????????????????????????? ???? ???? ?? ??? ??????? ?? ?? ??? ?? ???????? ??? ????????? ???? ??? ????? ?????? ??? ???? ??? ???? ? ??? ???????? ? ????? ??????? ????? ???? ?????? ???? ?? ??? ????? ?? ???????? ?????? ????? ?? ?????? ?? ????? ??? ?????? ??? ?????????? ?????? ???????? ?????????????? ????????? ??????? ????????? ???? ??? ?????? ???? ?? ? ???? ???????????? ????? ??? ?? ???? ? ??? ?? ?????????? ?? ?????? ???? ?? ???? ?? ???? ???? ??? ?? ???? ??? ?? ????? ?????? ????? ??? ????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????? ????? ??? ???????? ????? ?? ?????????????????? ??? ???? ????? ?????????? ??? ? ??????????
Well said Neil! People we need to take a look at what we are saying and doing here! It is all about CP. Yeah it is perfectly fine to talk about other parks in relationship to Cedar Point (i.e. competition, etc etc). If you want to say, and I use RCT talk here, Busch Gardens 1 is really good value, then head over to COASTERBUZZ (shameless plug). Here we talk about the Point and everything Cedar Point. Okay I am done now
