Debit card fraud alert!

Now, I know that this is a rather inflammatory message, but I figure this to be a public service. It is NOT a flame!

I have reason to believe that on 5/22/02, debit card/credit card numbers were being distributed, accidentally or otherwise, from Midway Market at
Cedar Point. I attempted to make a charge to my Visa debit card that day, and was told the Visa network was down, after I attempted to make a charge there. The next day, I found that someone had attempted to empty my checking account using my debit card number, using a number of different charges to ProCyber.com. Fortunately, Bank One ATM security discovered the fraud and shut the account down, so I'll not lose anything.

If you were at Cedar Point in the last few days and used a VISA card there, use due caution. I'm going to be contacting the park as well.

How do you make the connection to the park? To start accusing the park of any wrong doing without any facts is a really bad idea.

I've had fraudulent charges against my various accounts several times. You can't attribute it to anything in particular.

A subject here (besides Raptor) that I know ALL about thanks to being a fraud investigator for Discover Card. I do believe that when Midway Market told you they the Visa network was down when you attempted to charge there that in reality that is when Bank One probably had a security "hold" on your account. When a credit card company (any of them) are suspicious about attempted or other auths on your account they will attempt to contact you to ask, if no verbal contact is made they "freeze" the account until they talk to you. I do not believe the Midway Market would be your "point of compromise" only because you ATTEMPTED to use your card there so NO account # was ever processed. When Midway market told you the network was down I would be willing to bet that the zon machine actually prompted them to call in for an authorization (again caused by the security "freeze") There are a gazillion ways suspects can get someone's account #-remembering that EVERY where you use ANY credit card you take your chances they are all honest people, many times suspects even just "guess" at account #s. As for internet/phone/mail order frauds the companies are pretty careful about doing an addy verification with the credit card companies before shipping. If a company ships something and later turns out to be fraudulent then THAT company eats the fraud, not the credit card company. In defense of the credit card companies most have awesome fraud detection systems (I know we do) and most catch the fraud real quickly. But again I seriousely doubt the Midway Market is your point of compromise. If you have any questions please feel free to email me! :)

I appreciate what Raptor Jo said, but I was only one of three people in the party whose Visa cards were rejected, and the other two's accounts are fine. HOWEVER...

Turns out I got bad information at first from Bank One. Sergeant Davison of Cedar Point security contacted the fraud division, and was told that the bogus charges were made at 1am, the morning of my visit. I'll have a separate post of retraction on that point.
