When I first became an "enthusiast" I had to learn that there are amusement parks and there are theme parks. Disney and Universal parks being the ultimate examples of theme parks and Six Flags parks being amusement parks (very little theming). There are some parks that are in the middle (Busch Gardens parks, Dollywood, Knott's and certainly some in Europe). Cedar Point is more on the amusement park end of the continuum although there is some nice theming in spots around the park. Theme parks definitely have more dark rides including more dark ride portions on rides. Although CP leadership has changed over the years it seems they have decided to compete as the roller coaster capital of the world, building bigger, faster more intense coasters with just a little theming. I believe they have done well with this model of course. But I myself wonder why not a solid dark ride? Yes I know, Disaster Transport happened and failed but that was due to a cheaper budget and poor maintenance. And my friends and I still really enjoyed the ride anyway. It was a cool experience we all thought especially when everything worked in its first couple years. I am pretty certain a quality dark ride of some sort would be very popular. But I think they are stuck in the self proclaimed "roller coaster capital" moniker that they must only build the latest, greatest roller coaster. Clearly being an "amusement" park I wonder if we will ever see a top notch dark ride at CP.
