CP's Frozen Custard - Has it Changed for 2015?

I had the most delicious soft-serve frozen custard I've ever experienced from the stand by Los Gatos in Frontiertown in 2013/2014. I remembered it being so rich, creamy, and thick - unlike anything else I'd experienced from local ice cream and frozen custard shops.

Well, yesterday I had a craving for it, I hyped it up to my friend, and we walked over to that same location next to Los Gatos. I was really disappointed to find it now tasted like the watery, ice-milk frozen custard that I've had everywhere else. Has it changed, or was this just an off day?

I usually go to that one too. But on Saturday last weekend, it was closed so we went to the one next to the interactive midway fountain at the front of the park. Next thing you know, as the employee was dispensing the custard, the machine over flowed and custard started coming out all over the place. Long story short, the machine was obviously broken, the employee and his supervisor went above and beyond to keep us happy, so we didn't get to try it this season yet. Maybe next time.

Since Cedar Point, according to some, is dropping the ball all over the place this season, why not in the frozen dessert category as well?

By federal regulation, ice cream may contain up to 1.4% solid egg yolk by weight. To be called frozen custard the product must contain over 1.4%. While the two frozen custard stands at CP offer up what this ice cream snob would consider the best in the park, I've never been sure how they can pass that crap off as custard. It is on the slightly yellow side, certainly not bright white like ice milk, but it comes out of a soft serve machine so to me it's a fail. I used to get a hot fudge sundae with it, but last season they discontinued that so I quit getting it altogether.

And don't anyone bother to tell me about Toft's, I'm already hip. As a "premium" ice cream it's just ok in my book. I did notice when I was there yesterday that there's a product called Toftserve which is their version of softserve ice cream, so I suppose it's possible that in a pinch those frozen custard stands were dispensing something like that. Or worse.

I had some custard today at the stand next to Los Gatos and it was DELICIOUS. I think everyone needs to calm down now and realize CP had some hiccups here and there, but they are getting back on track. It was well worth it. I haven't tried the stand by the water fountain yet but I will.....and I'll report back as soon as I can!!

It's about 45 minutes east of Cedar POint (off the I-90 Rocky River exit)

If you went to Euclid Beach park in the past, I've heard its on par with theirs, and from the old fashioned machines, not the soft serve ones. I used to frequent the Fairview Park (suburb of Cleveland) location quite a bit. Their turtle sundaes and plain vanilla are to die for and I've yet to find a better strawberry shake anywhere (and yes that includes Tommy's and Red Robin). Check it out sometime.

I spent my childhood in Fairview Park and the old Mobile gas station on the corner of Lorain and Story is an East Coast Original now. I always make a stop whenever I'm in the hood. We'd also try to stop at the one in Solon when coming out of Geauga if it wasn't too late.

But when I was a kid it was Webers for frozen custard. There was one in Rocky River near the Kenny Kings. We'd get chicken, go down and watch the boats at the marina then go to Webers. I loved the chocolate, my mom always got the lemon.

Many cities lay claim to custard but I always think of Cleveland as the place where the best can be found. (Sorry, St. Louis). So many people from Cleveland visit the Point I wonder what they think of the product served there. Like I said, it's my favorite ice cream there, but not so authentic.

Just wanted to update that I gave the custard another shot this past Wednesday, this time at the stand by the interactive fountain (The stand in the back of the park was closed because of a power failure). I was relieved to find that it was the same delicious custard I have had in previous seasons!

It had a rich, creamy custard taste/texture and was completely unlike the sweet but tasteless stuff (that had a skim milk consistency) that I was served earlier in the season. I'm assuming that wasn't frozen custard at all, but frozen yogurt or soft serve that was subbed in or mistakenly used. Regardless, I can now answer my own question. No, the frozen custard has not changed in 2015; it was just an off day. Phew.
