CPLERR fans take note - "George R" alert!

Tonight I went to CP with my 2 year old son with the sole purpose of train ridin'. Boy, were we suprised to see the "George R" doing the hauling duties this evening. I haven't seen George personally in about 3 years.

Past threads have noted that CP brings him out for special occasions, like July 4th and Labor Day. I wasn't there on 7-4. Can anyone who was there on July 4th tell me if George ran then, too?

Love the coasters, obviously love the carousels, but I'm getting a rush out of the live steamers these days, too. Very glad to see my old pal, George R.!

CPLERR fans sound off!
I didn't really think much of it when I took the pic of the train, but the George R. was running on June 14. I saw the Judy K. behind the Wildcat bathroom too. Boy was she in need of some restoration.

George R. was George Roose, one of the developers who planned to close Cedar Point and turn it into a housing development back in the late 1950's. When the public outcry was even more significant than the backlash against the Millennium Force ticket system, he and his partner Emile Legros wisely decided that they should instead develop Cedar Point into the world's greatest amusement park. As a consequence, George Roose is largely responsible for making possible the Cedar Point we know today. Of greater interest to the subject at hand, it was George Roose who wanted Cedar Point to have a steam railroad. The Board of Directors thought it wasn't such a great idea, but George talked them into allowing him to set it up as a concession. The Cedar Point and Lake Erie Railroad was a huge success, of course, and was sold a couple of times before being purchased by Cedar Point, Inc.

It is, therefore, in honor of George Roose that one of the locomotives used on the CP&LE railroad is named after him, and is known as the George R.

Wow, here is a guy that goes from the most hated to being considered probably a hero. Wild story.
I thought it was G.E. Beckling who developed CP.

The Judy K is running just fine. What is parked behind the Wildcat bathroom is another formerly fine locomotive the JENNY K. Jenny no longer has all of her wheels! That's too sad to see. Maybe this is why CP erected the approx. 9 foot tall fence by the bathroom/watertower area to hide their shame?

As far as the tale of the two Georges...First of all, Cedar Point was around before George Boeckling, so he didn't "develope" it. GB certainly made it the great park of the early century. Mr. Roose, on the other hand, has been labelled the visionary that wanted to turn CP into the "Disneyland of Ohio", and launched the great comeback of the late 1950's through the 1970's.

Interesting to know that George R ran on June 14th, too. Thanks for the info!
How long has it been since "Albert" ran. Sad to see him sitting on what looks like permanent display. At least he still looks respectable (poor Jenny). Cedar Point has a real treasure with their old historic narrow gauge steamers. I hate to see any of them out of commission.

It was Boeckling who originally built up CP..however george R was a future figurehead in CP history along with Legros who built CP into what it is today!! Don't you people own "CP Queen of American Watering Places" ?? LOL :)
