CP Spending Some Serious Ad Dollars

I see that Cedar Point is a sponsor of the daytime Olympics coverage in the Columbus, Ohio market. Anybody see that they spending that kind of money in other medium to large markets? I was kind of impressed, because in the local "brought to you by:" spiel before the full network feed, they were second in line, and had almost a full 10 second voiceover during the intro. It will be interesting to see how many commercials they run during this block of TV time. I rarely see CP ads during daytime network TV in this market. Of course, we only get the Big 3, Fox, PBS and PAX here, as I cut the cable years ago.

Young Whippersnapper! The Big 3 are ABC, NBC, & CBS. Once upon a time, that's all there was! (Of course, I'm sure there's at least 1 old timer out there who remembers the Dumont Network, but let's not go there!)

I thought it was Dupont? If I remember right it was owned and operated by a division of the Dupont Company. They started in the Radio biz like all other TV pioneers. Shortly after the dawn of TV though Dupont merged with someone else to form the American Broadcasting Company (I think).

FOX has only been around since.. 1987?
It's the Dumont Network.

His statement makes me wonder further how CBS continues to be dominant in the ratings yet no one seems to watch any of their shows. I don't know anyone that actually loves Raymond or his show.

Remember that advertising on network affiliates is split into the local and national stuff. CP is not buying national time, and I doubt there's that much of a premium on Olympic time over regular time for the local stuff.

When I was at the Browns game (we got there way before it started b/c we had a suite) we were watching the olympics and they were giving an update and it had Cedar Point's logo (w/ snoopy) down in the left hand corner.
I always knew the Big 3 as ABC, NBC, & CBS. FOX got added as number "Big 4" several years ago.

God, am I THAT old?

Maybe its just me, but I haven't even seen any CP ads here in the Detroit market for several weeks. Are they decreasing their TV ads, or am I just spending too much time on the Internet to notice them?

BTW, the big three are ESPN, Comedy Central, and CMT. Everybody knows that! :)

Right, however I'd say that CBS hasn't been a "top 3" for a number of years now and has way bowed out to FOX's edgy programming style. The only thing that CBS has going for itself is Survivor. I don't think Big Brother or the Amazing Race really draw that much of an audience - certainly not to the degree of Survivor. Frankly, without Survivor I think they would have been off the air a long time ago.

Well, it's hard to kill a network. But, when I was growing up, Channel 8 out of Cleveland was the CBS affiliate, and later on, Channel 19 was Fox. It was so weird when they swapped affiliations! It was very unusual to see a major network on a UHF station, while Fox was down in the VHF bands. I guess it does not matter as much these days, what with cable & all, but, as a kid, VHF was what the antenna drew best, and that's where the networks all were, and UHF was where the "bargain basement" stations, like WUAB 43, or WKBF 61 could be found.

Apparently you forget that they have the number one rated show...CSI. That show is money, not to mention its good and not a one trick pony like the reality shows.

As it happens, ABC is the odd man out at #4. Which relates to theme parks only in that it drives the Disneyphiles all a-twitter. On a semi-related note, I'm going to be at Disneyland and DCA for the ABC prime time preview, which should be a moderately entertaining experience.

I don't know anyone that watches CSI either.

ABC has had some good shows now and then, but I think they got lazy when Millionaire was hot and didn't think about putting something else in the pipe. I still watch ABCnews and Alias, but that's about it.

Speaking of which, they aren't even starting Alias until after the new year, so it isn't broken up four weeks at a time with specials.

regardless of your opinions of the shows themselves, or the number of people you personally know who watch them, cbs had 9 of the 20 highest rated shows last season. thats almost half to you and me.

I watch both CSI and CSI:Miami. In fact my Thursdays my T.V. doesn't move from CBS. First is Survivor, then CSI, and finally Without A Trace. I will alos catch CSI:NY I only hope that they don't repeat the stories like they occassionally did on CSI:Miami. It looks like CBS is going to do to CSI what NBC did with Law and Order, which hasn't hurt that series and its spinoffs.

This past season on CSI they did on story line about a death on a coaster. Of course someone had tampered with the coaster, no operator or manufacturer error. The main character on the show is also acoaster enthusiast.

Yes you are...just like me. ;) I remember when Fox was a fledgling station and pretty much the joke of the industry. I remember watching Married with Children and when the Bundys would tune in to Fox, they all had their Fox viewing positions which consisted of holding antennas and miscellaneous pieces of metal to tune in the network. Funny stuff.

Married with Children, and later The X Files are probably the two shows in which the FOX Network was built on. Those two shows and several sporting event deals, including the last few years of a sweet NASCAR deal.
