CP Road Race?

Does anybody remember CP having a road race (running – not car racing) in September?  I think this would have been in the mid to late ‘80s.   I always thought it would be awesome to run a 10K (6.2 miles) around the coasters.  I never got to CP while they did this – and in fact maybe they just did it one year.   Being an official CP addict now, I wouldn’t miss such an event.

Disney World has a marathon in early January – thousands of runners show up to run around all the parks.  I think a CP race would be great in the Fall.

Anyway, I’m just wondering if anyone else recalls this – or am I totally mistaken?  Thanks for helping out my poor memory!

I'd be down for a car race.  All the N. Ohio cops seem to think I'm in one every time I head up that way, right Jo? :)  Too bad the autocross season is the same as when the park is open, that parking lot would be perfect for an autocross event.  :)  Uh oh, the car side of me is coming out...

Anyways, that was off topic, I don't remember anything of a running race, sorry.

I remember the CP race also CoasterMama. Speaking of cars, I had a good laugh on one of my trips to CP. I was going west on Rt. 2, just before Lorain. An a-hole in a car was traveling in the left lane, right next to a truck. Both were going at the same slow speed. Trying everything from flashing my high beams to honking my horn to get the guy to pass and move over for about 2 miles, nothing worked. I saw an on ramp empty of merging traffic, so I downshifted to third, moved to the right onto the on ramp, and passed the vehicles before merging back onto the highway. Being able to travel faster now, I accelerate to about 80 mph, the slowpoke accelerates to about 90mph to catch up and pulls next to me on the left. He rolls down his right window, starts yelling, and throws a Styrofoam cup filled with what looked like coffee at my car! Well, he didn't have very good aim, and most of the coffee went into his car as the cup hit the window frame on the way out. I had a great laugh and that really made my day!

You have no clue how lucky you were, Pete. Ohio cops have been known to pull that kind of thing, slow down next to trucks to lure people like you into breaking the law so they can ticket them. Of course, I'm from Michigan, and they tend to pick on out of staters more than they do people who live in Ohio.

yeah, but Ohio cops can't be in an unmarked car and pull you over, so you'd see he was a cop.

Geauga Lake used to have a run but I don't recall if CP ever did.
Ohio cops *love* pulling over Michiganians... I think they get bonus points for it or something ;)

I was too lazy to type the response again so I did a search.( It was probably quicker for me to type the response!). Anyway here is some info on the 10 K CP held.

Take a look what I was able to find:

and

The second annual race took place September 16, 1984, which would put the first one in 1983. Notice the California Natural stand in the middle of the midway. Ah ... more memories

Ohio police are known throughout law enforcement to be anal when it comes to tickets.  Knock on wood, I have never been stopped in Ohio.
There was a town in Ohio that was stopping people from Michigan for only having one license plate.

(People from Michigan will understand the problem here)

I think the state ended up fining the city.

Multiple licence plates?

I think a fellow GTTPer can relate to the 1 license plate pull over ordeal, but he's from Ohio. I got pulled over because my "county" tag on my front plate says "Raptor Rules". Some sheriff outside Bucyrus decided lack of anything else to do to "question" me about it. I told him I didn't see what the big deal was since I had the correct county tag on my back plate. He let me go stating since he could still read the plate he "supposed" it could be over looked. (Oh yea and of course he checked my tinting and was VERY disappointed it WASNT too dark) As far as speeding tickets go, I dont speed on way to CP or home (however in town it's a totally different story-ask my b/f and some of the horses Ive hauled! ;)) Rte 23/98 & 4 have speed traps everywhere and I am not willing to chance getting a speeding ticket-too expensive! Besides I always leave boo koo early to avoid having to rush. In all my trips I have seen TONS of people FLY by me only to see them pulled over up the road.

I know this is off topic, but this thread already is, so I have to put in a little plug. Anyone who enjoys driving should look at membership in the National Motorists Association (www.motorists.org). In addition to lobbying for issues like faster speed limits, removing red light cameras, etc., they have a great premium membership program. If you are a premium member and you are handed a moving violation, the organization will send you a check for the total amount of the fine. If you go to court with a not guilty plea and loose, they will send you another check to cover the fine. Yes, you read right, you can actually make money off a ticket. This is to encourage all members to fight traffic tickets in court. This is a great organization IMHO.

Yeah, it is off topic, but people who run red lights do need tickets.  That is way to dangerous.

But not given a ticket by a red light camera, used as a source of revenue for the municipality, and run by an outside vendor who gets a cut of the fines.. Often, the yellow light time is reduced to encourage running a red when studies have shown that increasing the yellow light time by a couple seconds almost completely eliminates red light runners. Red light cameras are a scam and should be done away with.

This is way off topic.  My last 2 cents.  I know in Michigan, it is a violation to run a yellow light.  Yellow means prepare to stop, not stomp on the gas.  As far as cameras are concerned, I don't know much about them.  I would think that the people who make the system, don't do so for free which could mean them getting a portion of the fines is just a simple way to pay off the system a city buys.  Yellow lights are timed by the amount of time it takes a car, going the posted speed limit, to cross the intersection from the large white stop bar to the other on the other side of the intersection.  Going faster than the speed limit is not a defense if one says I didn't think I could stop in time.  There is a point in the roadway where if one is doing the posted speed limit, they will be able to stop there car safely.  I have never wrtien a yellow light ticket in my life, there are plenty of people who run solid reds so I don't need to write Ohio type tickets.  Come on, how many times have you thought god I wish a cop was around to give that dumba** a ticket.  But it's always a different story when your the one getting the ticket.  Tickets writen by an officer or printed by a camera are both sources of revenue.  It is my understanding that a camera ticket carries no points.  It's like a parking ticket, issued to the registered owner of the vehicle.  However, having reveived my share of tickets when I was a teenager,  I don't agree with the camera systems, but I understand the point behind all the madness.  They are trying to get people to drive in a safe manner when there is NO cop around.  Enough said...this is about CP...no more from me on this subject.

Thing is, they have to take into account how long it takes to stop the car.  If I'm 6 feet from the white line, and the light turns yellow, you're telling me I have to stop my car, or get a ticket for not stopping???  If the speed limit is 55, say, that is impossible.

The camera's are dumb, too.  What if I let my girlfriend drive my car (not likely, but hypothetical) and she runs a red light.  I get a ticket for it.  Is that right?  Points go on my license, I pay the fines, yet I did nothing wrong.  That's why the camera's should be gone.  My 2 cents.

The vendor of the red light camera usually has a contract to administer the entire process on an ongoing basis. The cameras are placed similar to the way vending machines are placed in a business. Most laws also require a police representative to review the pictures, but most of the work in mailing citations is done by the camera vendor, including installation, timing, vehicle ID, and ongoing maintenance. Can you say “opportunity for corruption?” Also, I believe the cameras also go against sound legal principles, mainly no certifiable witness to the violation and failure to positively identify the driver of the vehicle. I can give you many other reasons why these cameras should not be used, but I’ll stop…
