CP & LE R.R.

Albert has been sitting on that Midway for as long as I can remember. I say it's been there for at least 14 years that I can recall.

Albert was retired back in the late 1990s with a cracked frame. It's boiler is actually rather new, having been replaced in 1951 with what was to be the last rivited locomotive boiler made in the US (built by Davenport-Bessler, Albert's maker). Jenny K has issues in the firebox, i.e. needs new sheets. George R (the locomotive formerly known as Victoria) has always been the heavist on the roster. Had a reputation of realigning the track where we didn't want it. It also is reletively new, built in the late 1940s for Carbon Limestone (it's sisters on the LK&P RR on Maui, Hawaii). It was the engine house queen pretty much through the 70's and 80's due to the reliability of the two Vulcans. It was pressed into service when the Vulcans were sent to Shop services for a complete overhaul. The ex Disney loco is also a much modified Davenport. It currently is set up to burn high distilate fuel oil. Much, much more expensive than that good old Ohio coal that the CP&LE burns. IMHO, until they really need it, it won't get converted back. It also has a wheel base as long, if not longer than Alberts, so this can be a consideration as well.

The 4 visible from the midways throughout the summer are JUDY K (named after Dick Kinzel's wife), George R (named after George Roose), Albert, and Myron. The one purchased from Disney has never made it onto the tracks for reasons described in the previous post. Aside from all of these, Maud L. and Jennie K. used to run the rails. Does anyone know whom these other four engines were named after and their importance to Cedar Point or the railroad?

Dutchman, I thought the CP & LE burned Pennsylvania coal, as the Ohio coal stinks too much because of the sulphur...

Wasn't Maud L. the one traded TO Disney?

And how come Disney doesn't mention it in their description of their fleet (posted under the Main St. station)?

--Dave Althoff, Jr.

Maud L was traded to Disney, and last check it was at Disneyland CA undergoing refurb, but that was a couple years ago. I would think its up and running now. Why did they trade her by the way? Was it just a good deal for CP getting a completely refurbed locomotive in favor of one that was beginning to need a refurb?

If i'm correct, about 5-7 years ago, I remember seeing an engine behind the engine house that was named Lucy. From what I saw, she had no tender and had a cab that really needed to be refurbished. Also, she was only a little bigger than Judy K. which is my favorite engine.:) and had the same paint to.

Rideman, when I worked there they used Ohio coal, and yes it stank and would emit the most ghastly looking orange brown smoke. Maude L was the Baldwin 2-4-4T Forney that was traded to Disney for the Ward Kimball. It was one of the two original locomotives of the CP&LE. After Albert and Jenny K went down they used the heck out her. She was in need of a thorogh class overhaul when the Disney deal was made. The Ward Kimball was purchased as a relief engine while the locomotives at WDW were being overhauled. It turned out that it was too small for their operation. They were going to send it to Anaheim, but after measuring it and the clearences on the DRR, found it to be too big for that operation. Now it just so happens that Maude L is a near duplicate of DRR #3 Fred Gurley. Thus the deal was made. However, apparently the Disney people didn't fully comprehend what kind of shape Maude L was in. My sources at the DRR tell me that a 2005 debut is not unlikely.

Jenny K was named after Jack Foster's daughter as I recall. Jack was the CP&LE's first superintendent. His named once graced the side of the cab of the locomotive now named Judy K. Albert has had that name since it worked the Louisiana sugar plantations. Myron H was named after the CP&LE's second super, Myron "Mike" Hetrick. Somewhere I have the info about where Maude got her name, but I don't remember off the top of my head this second.

On the website www.trainweb.org/amtrakpix/travelogues/71899A/71899B.html

there is the train Myron H. What is that track that runs next to the train?

That used to be the passing track at the midway station. There was switch up by the crossing gate keepers house on the Trail where it lead to the Giant Wheel. It rejoined th main just past the station. We used to park the second train there at night. It looks from this photo that it has been cut down to a stub siding.

Wasn't there an unused RR crossing on the Frontier Trail near Cedar Junction at one time? http://www.virtualmidway.com/leimages/cedarjunction0.jpg

I vividly remember the crossing you refer to, but I don't know the reason it was there. I would be interested to find out more about it. I noticed in the 'mini-golf' thread that there was a 1964 map that shows the original train route nearly running all the way to the SkyRide. Here is the link: http://www.virtualmidway.com/history/years/1964.asp . The junction may have been left behind from the old route ?

Now that I have studied that map, I think you're right about part of the old route. I wonder if they ever used it again to turn the train to the opposite direction on the current route. Of course, I've never seen the train go in the opposite direction. Have you?

The crossing at Cedar Jucntion on the Trail was part of the original reversing track. Before the Giant Wheel was installed the CP&LE went all the way up to where the walkway to the Marina gate was. It was the procedure to alternate each day what direction the trains went to keep the wear on the wheel flanges even. In 1971-72 the lagoon was filled in and the station was moved to it's present location. At the same time the Giant Wheel was installed and the Trail was completed. Before the Trail you could get to FT only by the Frontier Lift or the CP&LE. Now the water tank and engine house were no longer several hundred feet down the line. They were next to the station. Stopping a train just shy of the station to take on water would be a operational nightmare. The option of erecting a second tank on the other side of the station was discarded and one way operation came into being. The reverse track became redundant and was used for storage on both sides of the Trail, with the display at Cedar Junction crossing. By the way the first display at the Junction was the 1870 Porter D B Harrington. This loco was the personal property of George Roose. After he retired Victoria was placed there. This is the locomotive you know as George R. When it was pressed into service the crippled Albert was put in it's place.

Isn't part of the track removed now due to Millennium Force in 2000? -And all that is left is where Cedar Junction sits.

CP only moved the track closer to the perimeter road about 15-20 feet to accommadate the lift. Yes, the old switches, sidings, and track leading to the junction were removed also.

I do remember the trains running around reverse. The switch over line joined the main where the "I've Been Working on the Railroad" skeleton scene is and where MF's station currently is.
