CP & LE Railroad question

This is one of those stupid, irrelevant things that I can't get out of my head. Does anybody know if there was more to Boneville before Mantis was installed? I have this vague idea that there may have been one or two more vignettes of skeletons that were removed when the coaster went in.

Also, was there any theming for the railroad that was pulled out when Thunder Canyon went in? Again, I have this hazy memory of something on that leg of the track, but I'm sure I'm completely off.

Maybe Doug has some old photos?

Like I said, just one of those stupid, irrelevant things. ;)

hmm... i can't remember if it was the boats or the train, but I remember getting "shot at" quite a bit when I was a kid (I know it definitely happened on the paddlewheels, and I think there were some gunshots at the train as it went over a lagoon). Compressed air would make the water splash as though bullets were hitting the water.

^That still happens on Paddlewheel Excursions.

Paddlewheel definetly had a lot more involved before Iron Dragon, before Mantis, etc. With as little space as those things take up, I'd love to see them revamp it up a bit, and make it more interesting for everyone. :)

I don't recall specifically on CP &LE Railroad, though. My parents would take us on paddlewheel a time or two during "nap time", to calm us down a bit, but not so much with the Railroad.

Looking forward to Cedar Point- July 4th-5th, 2007!

Although I'm not exactly sure where they were located or when they were removed, it does appear that there were, at one time, other scenes...

And there appear to have been some subtle changes to the existing ones at some point...

I didn't realize how much that railroad stuff changed. Does anyone remember when they had that haunted train ride awhile back to?

Thanks, Doug. A couple of those shots rang a bell (no pun intended).

This shot in particular:

is actually from a postcard, which I recognize from my Cedar Point collection. I still haven't gotten my scanner back yet -- long story -- but I'm hoping very soon I can get all those posted over there.

If you have about 20 minutes to watch the first 2 uncut Cedar Point 1963 Youtube videos, you might see what you were looking for. There are a lot of train and jungle cruise scenes. Here's a link to cut 1 Click Here [Checkout the fire dive around the 6:15 mark of part 1!!]

There has never been a Boneville scene where Mantis sits. Many tend to forget that the line wasn’t re-located to it’s current location until the Main Station was moved in the spring of 1970 for the new ‘Million Dollar Midway’. The original return leg of the Railroad’s mainline was the crossover through Cedar Junction that was removed when Millennium was built in 1999. Though it stayed in place when the track was re-located, it was never used other then for storage.

The scene you might be thinking of is the ‘Wells Fargo’ Burning Building that was located roughly where the Frontier trail crosses where the line used to be, right before the first Bandit hold up scene. The Burning Building we have today is newer of course, but I am not 100% sure when it was originally built. My guess is when they did re-locate the line. This scene is the only one that has been put on the re-located track ever. The rest are pretty much in their original spots.

As for the scene back by Thunder Canyon you recalled, that is another spot for the old Bandit hold up. It was located pretty much exactly across from where the old Frontier carousel building is. The photo I have linked here is looking from the Bandit point of view towards Sandusky Bay- http://www.cplerr.com/cpg143/displayimage.php?album=4&pos=3

Hope that helps! :)

From everyone on the CP&LE, RIP Mayor Scott...~

I'm always humbled by the amount of knowledge and lore possessed by users on this site. Yes, I was thinking there was one, maybe two scenes on that outgoing leg near Thunder Canyon. That clears it all up for me.

Frito Joe, appreciate the link. I'll have to check it out at work tomorrow (gotta get broadband someday). :)

I'm surprised Cuyahoga Falls doesn't offer broadband to all of their residents. Don't they have their own water and power companies?

On photo #18 the lights on the Giant Wheel are the old pattern. Anyone know when they changed the lights and why? I liked them much better curved, they seemd to look like a giant flower, not the pointed abstract design they are now.

Yes, I have a set of postcards dealing mainly with the railroad. There is one that depicts an indian lying face first with an arrow in his back. And some other scenes that are not there today. I am not sure of the location. Of course, some of those are not "Politicaly Correct" today. <--- I cannot spell!

Disney Mike,

I did not know that the wheel ever changed it's lights. But, could it be when they moved it from the final turn of millie over to it's current home.

Peace, Mikey

The first link below shows the old pattern (pre-move) and the second link is of it's new location and lighting package.

Man, such memories. Especially the bandits holding up the train, one of my first memories of CP, along with the parking lot trams and where the midway ended before the Million Dollar Midway was constructed.

CF (Cuyahoga Falls, not Cedar Fair) does have its own water and power systems. We get some of the cheapest rates on both in the entire Midwest. As far as broadband goes, there is a plan in place to eventually wire most of the city for wi-fi, but as yet nothing's materialized.

Edit: we could get DSL or Time Warner high speed, just haven't gotten around to it yet. (I'm one of those s l o w adapters. ;) )

While the Giant Wheel looked great behind the train station (pre-1995 anyway), the new location looks better to me. The beach with WT jetting out on both sides looks great, although you have to look past that ugly warehouse like thing to the right.

I think that the ugly warehouse completes the look of that midway. The candid shot with Troika, Giant Wheel, Wicked Twister, and the infamous 12E is one of my favourite shots.

In the Disaster Transport thread there is a link to the 1985 brochure and the Giant Wheel is still located behind the CP&LE RR but with the new light package. They must have changed the lights even before they moved the location.

I still like the old light package better.
