Corkscrew & Iron Dragon

Considering my Cedar Point life started in 1987, I was wondering if anyone had any cool memories about the year Corkscrew and/or Iron Dragon opened. Thanks!
In 87 when Iron Dragon opened, the lines where terrible!!! Just like at any new attraction opening i guess. The park sure did seem different that year because they moved quite a bit of rides around for the Iron Dragon. If anyone remembers before the ID, wasn't that called the Giant wheel midway? They had several rides on that short midway along with one of the frontier lift stations as well!! Also that was where you got on the boats at.
Ah, yes, the year they destroyed the Western Cruise (see my screen handle). They had removed the Frontier Lift the prior year, which was also a shame.

Small rides in the area of Iron Dragon (besides the Frontier Lift station and the Western Cruise dock) included the Monster (relocated to the Gemini Midway, but then "on" the Iron Dragon queue), the Schwabinchen (sp?) and the Baryn Curve (sp?), and I'm not certain what else.

Where was the Tiki Twirl (a Calyspo clone)? Near or by the present location of the Matterhorn?
You are right about the Tiki Twirl...it was right where the Matterhorn sits today.
The Iron Dragon Midway was known previously as "The Million Dollar Midway". *** This post was edited by Old Timer Tim on 4/21/2001. ***
I remember when the Corkscrew debuted in 1976..unfortunately, I was still a bit young ( and afriad!) to ride, so I waited for about an hour while the rest of my family went. There was so much hype around the coaster, and people used to just stand in awe and watch it go upside down...quite rare in those days.

1987 was my 2nd year at the park in Live Shows, and I was psyched to ride Iron Drgaon. I rode it a few times in May before the crowds picked up and always thought it was cool at the end. However, after riding Big BadWolf at Busch Gardens Williamsburg that fall, the Iron Dragon pretty much pales in comparison.

Hey, how about getting rid of the OTS restraints? It couldn't hurt!

I remember Corkscrew opening. I threw a fit because I wasn't tall enought to ride. I sat on a bench underneath one of the corkscrews and watched my parents and brothers ride!! :( i wanted to ride so bad!

I remember waiting over 90 minutes in the hot hot sun to ride Corkscrew. The reaction to the ride was pretty much the same as today - uncomfortable, too short, harsh. But it was still quite a sight - made the midway visually more interesting - lots of people hanging out under the corkscrews watching the people go upside down so close to the ground. In some ways those were the best days of Cedar Point; it had more trees, people's expectations about new rides were much lower, it was more unique. Or maybe it was just that I was much younger. Whatever.

Go on a busy Saturday. I've been there some of these days and was very surprised to see a full Iron Dragon queue (before the recent reduction). It's still a popular ride.

I remember '87, Iron Dragon was the greatest! (Still my baby - working it one season helps! :)) After riding it, I went to a bookstore and a book with "dragon" in the title caught my eye, and 15 books later is one of my favorite authors/series. The odd associations we will make!

Iron Dragon was a big deal to me when it opened. There were only 2 or 3 suspendeds at the time before ID opened. I rode Big Bad Wolf previously and thought ID was not in the same league. But it's a fun ride. I just wish they could have made the lift hill bigger, or the first part of the ride longer with more intense shifts in direction.
Iron Dragon was the first "big" coaster I rode. I grew up terrified of coasters and considered the Mine Ride a pretty big deal. I remember we were sitting near Iron Dragon eating lunch (may have been at the Paddlewheel Cafe). My sister and I watched Iron Dragon the whole time and decided that it really didn't look *that* bad. It wasn't very tall and there weren't any loops. Got hooked on coasters after the first ride. I managed to drag my mother on it several years later. She's still terrified of coasters :)
