Construction Update Columbus to Sandusky

LuvRaptor's avatar
Hi all. Went back to Sandusky and CP yesterday
and here is the latest construction messes for us coming from mid-Ohio. Skipped 270N-so not sure if construction there to 23 done-I prefer back roads to 36/37 to 23. 23-N-only 2 outside lanes open (so what else is new) Rte 4N and 98N ok, nothing going on now. Rte 4 over Ohio Turnpike, repaving done, looks like lines going down soon-all lanes open again. Any of you who take Rte 4N to Rte 2E to get to 250 you need to find another route (I know how but not by street names-sorry) Rte 2E off Rte 4 completely closed off and jacked up.
THAT is about 4 years late if you ask me, what a mess that highway was. So of course with CP opening in a matter of DAYS lets close it down and work on it NOW!!
(Welcome to Ohio, you cant get there from here, here, here, here or here)

If I cant ride it, rope it, pull a trailer behind it then I dont want it--Cowgirl up!!
Thanks Luv! I'll be making the drive up tomorrow for my first weekend of work! I do the 315/270/23/98/4 Route also...and construction is done from 270 to 23. Last time I ran into some construction in downtown Bucyrus though, but apparently that must be over with now.
Everyone in my hometown of Huron is VERY happy that the Rye Beach Rd. bridge over Rt. 2 is back open! :)

Just a reminder, when you take SR 4 to Sandusky, consider cutting east on Bogart Rd, which is the last light before SR 2. You can take Bogart to Columbus Ave, and turn left, heading north. You'll pass under SR 2 almost immediately, and pass by the housing development where I grew up. Stay on Columbus Ave until you hit Scott Street. urn right on Scott Street, and stay on it. It will turn into 5th Street. Take 5th all the way to Causeway Drive, and turn left at the light. Why mess with 250 when you can go the way the locals go?

That sure helps me. I'll be coming up to my parents place in southern Delaware Co., and heading up from there. We usually just go 23 to 4, skipping 98 all together. I just find it's easier to go faster on 23 than 98. Don't know which way would save more time, I just like going fast. :)

Tim, I generally just stay on OH-4 right into town, go counter-clockwise around the park, and take Monroe St/First Ave. down to the Causeway. Again, why mess with US-250 if you don't have to?

ucsigep, I have determined that taking US-23 to OH-4 instead of OH-98 adds almost exactly one mile to the travel distance. The time is probably a wash, though, because US-23 is 65-mph while OH-98 is 55 mph.

LuvRaptor, remember that on that stretch of US-23 they routinely shift traffic between the inside and outside lanes...it's not really a construction situation, but rather an ongoing experiment comparing a bunch of types of pavement. Did they finish off the paving there on the railroad overpass? On Sunday that had been planed down, but not yet repaved.

Also, construction headaches may just be starting. Sunday I noticed LOTS of car-counters positioned at virtually every intersection between the Turnpike and Perkins Ave. I wonder if they're doing a study to see if it's necessary to widen OH-4 through there.

What's everyone's opinion on the I-71 to Rt. 13 route. That's what I usually take. Of course, I hate drives of more than a few minutes on anything less than 4 lanes :)

The best part of 23 to 4, the Bratwurst capital of America! I always try to stop in Bucyrus to pick up some brats! They're the best brats I've ever had! Last year I went with some friends and stayed at one of their parents houses just off the entrance road in Huron. We left the park for lunch and grilled up some great brats, no better way to spend the day.

I used Tim B's route all of last year and it works great. Less traffic, faster and more interesting to look at.

I have friends in Bucyrus so I have made the trip many times. I also have friends who live down here but have relatives in Bucyrus and make the trip almost every week and we all agree -- there is no time difference between 23/98/4 and 23/4. Rideman is right that the speed difference compensates for the added distance.

And one word of warning -- Rt. 98 is considered very dangerous by the Highway Patrol and and local Sheriffs because it is narrow in a lot of places. Generally speaking they cut no slack on speeding.

I'll bet you could shave 20 minutes some days by going Bogart/Columbus/Scott Street. It's a much more relaxed drive, and about 70% fewer traffic lights.

I noticed LOTS of car-counters positioned at virtually every intersection between the Turnpike and Perkins Ave. I wonder if they're doing a study to see if it's necessary to widen OH-4 through there.

That's no study. Construction begins soon to eliminate the bottleneck between Bogart and the Turnpike. I pity those poor souls coming off the 'Pike at 250.

During the REALLY busy times of year, the best way to come to the park is to turn right off of 4 onto Bogart Rd. Take it all the way down to Galloway Rd. and turn left. Take it up to Perkins, turn right, and go across the RR tracks. You'll be at the Chausee entrace after a mile. Sure, its a longer route, but this can really help avoid the traffic around 250 and the wait to get through the toll booths at certain times.

I forgot to mention one other little item. Be aware of all the deer on Rtes 23/4/98. I saw tons of them "hanging" out in the fields and tons of them dead on the sides of the roads and in the fields. The young deer apparently havent listened to their Moms telling them to stay away from the street. I know the damage a deer can do to your car, I know of someone who was killed when the deer came through her windshield, not to mention stories of airbags deflating when they hit the deer. They are a plenty this season so be on the look out for those beety eyes and white tails! I dont want any of my GTTP family getting hurt (or delayed getting to CP or home) :)

It will be really nice to not have to contend with that freaking detour around Attica!
It will be really nice to not have to contend with that freaking detour around Attica

A word about detours! Remember that when the state sets up a detour on a State Route like SR 4, they have to use other State Routes, or roads which can handle the heaviest vehicle legal for the section being closed. This means the detour can take you miles out of the way & back, just to fulfill that criteria.

You can get around that in your little 4 wheel crackerbox by driving past that big old ROAD CLOSED X MILES AHEAD sign, and driving right up to where the road is actually closed. There you will find a convenient country side road, which you can take to go around the obstacle. Follow the country road, take the first turn in your direction of travel, and stay on that road until you have cleared the obstacle. Then, take the next convenient country road back to the State Route, at which point you will be back in business. Still a pain in the butt, just much faster.

Good point, Tim! In Northern Ohio, the country roads are conveniently laid out in a nice grid, with roads and cross roads spaced at approximately half-mile intervals.

Bear in mind the locations of the railroad tracks, too, and pick your detour routes accordingly. Those country roads do include rail crossings, but those crossings occasionally get blocked by stopped trains...

Yeah, I was new to Ohio last year and it was my first trip up that way and the map I had didn't show the smaller roads. Ah, excuses :)
