Communication cable gone

Noticed on a recent trip that the center wire on sky ride is gone. I believe this was the communication cable that synced both ends of the ride. There is now a new 2 ft wide path of concrete that has been repaired running continuously from one station to the next. It appears that they moved the cable underground. Does this cable really need to be there with all of the wireless technology out today?

The cable I believe also serves the cable derail switches on the towers. That is not the kind of thing you could (or want) to do wireless.
