Columbus area to CP route

LuvRaptor's avatar

As in previous years I will play highway patrol and give all us Columbusians (?) the heads up on the CP route this season. Rte 23-NO construction (gasp! But again that could be different today) I know some prefer 4 straight thru to causeway but I prefer Rte 98 to 4. Rte 98 was repaved 2 years ago so it's smooth driving clear to Bucyrus. No construction going on @ this time but there were still several miles of sewer piping sitting on the sides of the road here and there so be prepared. If anyone knows of the Subway/Shell station right outside of Bucyrus and make it a regular "pit stop" (I know I always did) it is closed! I was SHOCKED! So make sure you go before then (there's always Hardees in downtown Bucyrus (no frisco burger for you BE! ;)) and there's a Sunoco/Chesters Fried Chicken place on the left hand side next to Bob Evans shortly after that you can use in case too. Just giving you the heads up!! And as always be aware of the deer there are TONS we almost took out 2 the night before Media Day!

OH-98 is scheduled to be closed Wed. 5/8 for three days, or at least that's what the sign said Sunday. But as that's three days that the Point isn't open that shouldn't be a big deal for us lot. The Shell station is closed, certainly, but that station is between Attica and Siam on OH-4. If you are Southbound it's no big deal at all because there is a Citgo station in Attica which has a nice convenience store and a couple of clean restrooms. A much nicer stopping place than the Shell station ever was.

And just in case anybody doesn't know, this site helps a lot when traveling on Ohio:

I live in Dublin in the summer. Last year I took US 23 north to Marion and SR 4 north to Sandusky, riding the Causeway to the Point. That's the most direct route, although my family took I-71 north to Ashland and US 250 west to Sandusky once.
I made a mid-trip stop somewhere near Bucyrus, but I don't think it was the Shell that closed.

Actually, OH-98 is the point at which US-23 curves to the West to head for Toledo. OH-98 runs straight North from US-23 to Bucyrus, which is where OH-4 curves to the North to go to Sandusky. The most direct route is US-23 to OH-98 to OH-4. The difference in mileage between taking OH-98 and taking US-23 up to OH-4 is (are you ready for this?) one mile. Time wise, there is probably less of a difference because the speed limit on OH-98 is 55 MPH (except through Kirkpatrick where it is 45) while on US-23 it is 65 MPH.

What is the distance between the OH-98 exit and the OH-4 exit? I might try the 23-4 route at some point this season to see which I like better.

According to my map, from OH-98 to OH-4 is thirteen miles, from US-23 to OH-98 on OH-4 is another sixteen miles (29 miles).
OH-98 from US-23 to OH-4 is 28 miles. And in Bucyrus you get to go straight through instead of turning left.

==========

Bad news for all us Columbus people! WCMH-TV reported last night on the ten most dangerous intersections in Central Ohio, and the top three are all on the road to Cedar Point--

#1: OH-315 at Powell Rd.

#2: OH-98 at OH-309
(This is the traffic light immediately north of the infamous River Valley High School)

#3: OH-98 at OH-529
(this is an uncontrolled intersection between US-23 and OH-95 where ODOT says people just drive too fast)

Let's all be careful out there!!

315 at Powell Rd, I remember when there wasn't even a light, now THAT was dangerous. I'm just glad I live on 23 north of Columbus.

I used to go 23 to 4, but I didn't realize they repaved 98 in the last couple years. I used to avoid 98 b/c I could go 70 on 23 rather than 45 or 50 on 98 and deal with the crappy road. Now, though, I'm taking 98 every time.

All I know is that I'm not digging this (Athens--> )Columbus-->Sandusky route I have to take now if I want to visit the Point. I give all of you who are used to making this treak a lot of credit because I sure do miss my old 45 minute drive from Cleveland. Route 2 to Rye Beach Road baby :o)

We have settled on Rt 23 to Rt 4. I like the 65mph speed limit on Rt 23. Take Rt 4 all the way into Sandusky. At the intersection of Rt 4 and Columbus St, cut over to Monroe ( either cut across at an angle / going straight ahead, or turn left and then right at the next light) and then take 1st St over to the causeway and turn left.
