Cell phones at CP

Does anyone know if theres Cingular Wireless service in Sandusky or mainly Cedar Point? I have the Cingular nation thing and the little map I have shows service in Cleveland but not in Toledo so its hard to tell.

If idiots could fly planes, this place would be a friggin airport!

Cingular sells out of Staples in Sandusky, so I'm guessing that they have coverage in town and at the Po!nt. However, by the looks of their coverage maps, you won't get much further than a mile or so west out of town before you lose coverage, so it might be spotty on the peninsula.

I can tell you without a doubt that T-Mobile covers everything but the innermost depths of the Hotel Breakers.

We've had good luck with our Verizon phones as well.

I remember when Verizon only worked on the north end of the park, by Magnum or Gemini. Everywhere else in the park was a Roaming area. Now it works everywhere. "Good."

Sprint phones, from what I remember, have a difficult time at CP. I don't know about the other carriers, though.

I have a Cingular phone and have had no problems with it at the park.
TekGuy: just to clarify, is this from your experience, or are you inferring from my post? We don't worry about roaming, since our phones have no-roaming-anywhere, ever. I travel often enough that it's better to just not think about it. So, "regular" verizon customers might or might not roam when at the Point; I don't know.
We've had Verizon for several years. When we had to pay "roaming" there were only certain areas of the park where the phones worked well, others where they did not work at all.

Now that we have"free roaming", our phones seem to work great just about anywhere at CP.

Wish I could say the same about our experience at SFGAm last year. The phones hardly worked at all.

Two summers ago, Sprint coverage was ok at the front of the park, but nonexistant near the back (by Mean Streak). Last year, though, I had no problems with PCS coverage anywhere in the park.

I'm glad to hear Verizon works well at CP. The last time I was there, it said it was roaming. When did Verizon change their roaming zone to include CP?
No one has mentioned it yet, so...

AT&T Wireless works super duper at CP.

John, roaming depends on your Verizon plan and where your home area is. I have a Verizon plan that includes free roaming and free long distance. Most plans are like that now. BTW, Verizon has really great coverage. Not just at CP, but in some of the island areas that are completely dead to my friend with Sprint.

Florida may have Disneyworld and Key West,
but Ohio has Cedar Point and Put-In-Bay.
It's great to live in Ohio!

I have Nextel and it works great at the park.

Brian, that was from personal experience.

There's a fun story to the Verizon thing, stemming back to when it was AirTouch.

When Cellular One left the Southeastern Michigan area (I think it was due to a lawsuit concerning the rounding up to the next minute deal and not putting that fact in the contracts), AirTouch became the carrier. They expanded the home user area to include all the way to Sandusky from Toledo, following the Turnpike corridor. (Service along the Turnpike was spotty though.)

What many didn't know is that the AirTouch cellular system in the Sandusky area was run by another company that licensed the AirTouch name. Therefore, while it showed on service maps that Sandusky was in the service area, you actually were on a different company's network. Hence, the roaming status.

Now that the various carriers merged to form Verizon, they expanded their network to include better coverage along the Turnpike, and put in new towers in the Sandusky area, so that customers could get off that other company's network and on to their own.

Of course, people subscribing to SingleRate (which I have) are immune from roaming charges. Now that you don't roam in the park, it doesn't matter any more. People under SingleRate, the America's Choice network, RegionalRate, and the DigitalRate Home Area plans are within the home service area in Sandusky. (Or whatever they call the service plans now.)

In any case, watch for the R. If your plan doesn't include roaming, you may want to think twice before placing a call. Roaming fees can be high, and can take several months to show up.
