Cedar Point's future direction

I am curious what you think CP's long-term plan is - where do you think the park is headed? What I mean by that is, do you think they will keep building multi-million dollar thrill rides every year, placing less emphasis on rides "the whole family" can enjoy? Do you think they will continue to remove some of the more unique attractions (Fascination, IMAX, Oceana) and replace them with not-so-unique ones (another food stand, show, and coaster)?

Any thoughts?

I think they will continue to bring what the people want. If taking out unique attractions like fascination, IMAX, Oceana and replacing them with multimillionaire dollar attractions ie. rollercoasters is what brings in the money then that is what they will do. I think however that while they are still adding record breaking coasters and thrills there is still a need to create the atomosphere with some few unique things here and there rather than just a parking lot with rides. Whatever they plan to do they are professionals at it and will most likely take the park in the right direction. Have they gone the wrong way yet?

2002 is the perfect example of how the park is expanding in more than one way. Wicked Twister represents the multi-million dollar thrill ride category, and Snoopy Rocks On Ice represents the family category.

But is it really bringing any more money in? How have attendance figures been the last few years? With admission around $42, pop at $3 a bottle, and parking at $8, a day at the park is getting pretty steep. I wonder how many families are getting to the point that they can't justify spending a big hunk of money for a day at an amusement park (CP or elsewhere).

Please don't get me wrong...I love Cedar Point! I'm not trying to show impending doom or anything like that. I guess I'm just concerned that attendance will start to slip, prices will go up to compensate, and a vicious cycle could start.

Maybe this is opening up a gap for the return of the smaller parks...

CP will focus on the resorts while continuing to add rides to the park. I think the Bon Aire section of the Breakers will probably be replaced soon, and possibly another hotel will be built. There was an interesting article in a paper (Sandusky Register I think) that stated it is CP's goal to eventually become a year round operation. One of the ways to do that is to build a hotel like the Great Bear Lodge, with an indoor water park.

Unless you start first thing in the morning.

here's what i think,Cedar Point is a THILL park,so they are going to continue to deliver those thrills to the people that ask for them,Cedar Point is not as much of as a family park as say for example Kennywood. It's more of a thrill park to me. I'm Thinking Cedar Point will take ripcord out and use that aera back there beside meanstreak to build the next coaster, but thats just my opinion. The way i see it is, Cedar Point wants to be on top, they are on top, they want to continue to STAY on top! so they must build more attractions for the guests to make them happy, although i don't think there will be another coaster untill..late 2003. Maybe they will build another food stand.. Just in my opinion i think they should take corkscrew out,i know its an old coaster, and theres alot of memories and history. I just dont think alot of people like it to well. These are just my opinions,no promises in this post..just my opinions :)
I think they are going to close up shop, tear everything down, and build a golf course community with multi-million dollar homes.

They will keep doing what they are doing, which has been fairly successful for over 125 years.

The park is known for its rides, and in some ways, I think that works against them. The thrill ride attraction crowd isn't always the best demogrpahic.

While there is that perception, the construction of Camp Snoopy is a good indication that they're trying very hard to make sure it is a family park, and with hotels and a water park you further drive home that point. I think they need to plug their shows more... they're far and away some of the best I've seen.

The park will build whatever will attract interest and provide a relatively quick return on investment.

Chief Wahoo, you should point out that the plans for that golf course community are on display at Town Hall....:)

Yeah, I figured you would get the connection Dave! As much as I love C.P., imagine what a great course could be built on that Peninsula!

It would be a great site for a PGA event. The wind would bring havoc.

Forget that... Close the park and hold the tournament there. :) I think it'd be sort of interesting to see if Tiger Woods couldn't hit a ball from Raptor to Mean Streak, (dogleg left) while avoiding the MF island... Hmmmmm...

I think that CP is going the right direction by adding more family friendly attractions, and also by expanding the hotels. If families can make vacations out of the park, that just means more revenue.

I think CF will focus more on it's other parks, mainly MIA. Like adding a resort style setting there. Something like a Great Bear Lodge style resort/hotel. I think CF will continue to try 'draw' the 'thrill' crowd to CP, as Jeff mentioned. But I think now that they have the Snoopy peeps, the 'Family' part of the park, is becoming easier for them to premote. If you can remember back before the Snoopy gang, what did CP (or even CF for that matter) have as a man-stay as a 'family symbol'. Look @ WDW, of course they have mickey and the bunch, six flags has superman, batman, basically marvel stuff, Paramount has anything they own, and CF had nothing. So I think this 'family' 'thing' started not too long ago, but has, and will continue to escilate into something bigger than anyone can imagine.

I Think CP will always be the main park...with the most money put into it...but yea CF might put some more money ontio its other parks or even open a new park...Maybe somewhere in NY :)

Welcome to New York City

CP did have the Berenstein Bears before Snoopy...remember Berenstein Bear Country, with the big inflatable treehouse that tended to blow off during high winds? Whatever happened to that area anyway?

Also, they've gotten such a reputation for building the biggest and best that there are now a bunch of coaster dorks who are impossible to please unless they build a record breaking hyper inverted standup woodie every two years. Just look at all the whining when WT was announced. WT could probably be the lead attraction at many parks, but at CP, it's "just an impulse."

I agree that within the next five years, the Bon Air wing will probably bite the dust in favor of a new larger resort structure. The whole idea of night life seems like a place that they could make a killing too.
