Cedar Point Nostaglia

I have been coming to Cedar Point since 1974. I love everything about it. The atmoshere, the rides, the location...everything. I believe CP has been able to maintain its family appeal while adding the great rides that we know and love today (Gemini being my all time favorite)! I'm sure George Boeckling would be proud.

I know everyone who has visited CP has their own memories. Besides the great roller coasters, I have a few memories I would llike to share in hopes of generating some discussion.....One of my favorite rides as a child was Earthquake. Earthquake was located where the Snoppy Boutique is today (Berenstain Bear Country before that). My question is what year did Earthquake close? 1985 or earlier? What a great ride!

Another great indoor ride was the Pirate Ride (PR was located next to the Silver Dollar Cafe. Opps, I mean the Game Day Grille). Does anyone know why the Pirate Ride was closed? Lack of interest and riders, maybe? I loved that old pirate ship that was in front.

(By the way, CP should bring back Rotor!)

Does anyone remember when Fort Sandusky (Frontier Trail) was an attraction and not just a leather shop? I remember climbing up those steep stairs to get to the top of Fort Sandusky. You could see down both directions of Frontier Trail. I still remember hearing gun shoots coming from Boneville and the Western Cruise. Very cool childhood memory!

I could keep going....OK, one more....How bad were those Western Cruise Captains! Really bad jokes!!! Really great memories!

I would like to read about some of your memories. (Hopefully I did not break rule number 4 by posting this???!!!!)

Ok...i got some questions...What was the Earthquake, the Pirate Ride, and the Rotor? Haha...i remember my mom going to CP about four years ago asking people how to get to the earthquake....."Mom! It was removed fifteen years ago!" is what i should've said but i didn't know at the time lmao. She described it to me but I don't remember what she said...something like simulating your in a major Las Vegas Earthquake I think she said.

That would be the Great Las Vegas Earthquake of 1904. :-)
As soon as I posted this I received an email on some dates. Brennan and Tambo, you were close on the city for Earthquake. I do remember it was based on San Franciscon, not Las Vegas. Sometime between 1966 and 1985 San Francisco Earthquake was changed to just Earthquake.

1961 Rotor Added

1966 Pirate Ride and San Francisco Earthquake Added.

1985 Earthquake removed and Rotor removed

Earthquake opened in 1965 and closed after the 1984 season. For the most comprehensive and accurate timeline, check out the history section of this web site.

I've also got a temporary copy of the Virtual Midway history section online. There's a lot of historical stuff missing, but there's also a lot of information there was well. That will help fill the gap until the history project is complete over the off-season.

Walt,
I was just looking at your old VM history section and I noticed something I hadn't seen before. You completely left Berenstein Bear Land out of the Defunct Attractions section. That place was pretty cool, and I don't have a whole lot of memories about it. I was pretty much too old for it when I started going, but I took a run through it, just to see what was there. It would be nice to see some pictures of the inside if anyone has them.

Yea the Berenstein Bear Land was a lot of fun for me when i was young. It's really a shame that they had to do away with it. What was the reason again? I can't remember. But nowadays the kids have Camp Snoopy.

I have many happy memories of running and playing through Berenstein Bear Land (when it was just inside the former Earthquake building). But I always seem to remember being rushed out of there so my older siblings and parents could get to the big rides.

The new project will be very complete. For now, this should satisfy.

I was kinda more suprised at myself because I used to go browse through the defunct attractions pretty regularly and had never noticed before. I can't wait to see the new section you put up on PB, it'll be great to see some of things you have.

Actually, the history site will be separate from PointBuzz, with its own domain name. There's a group of 5 of us who will be working on the project this winter. We all have great respect for Cedar Point history and all of us have a lot to add to the project. I'm very excited because of the group we've assembled. The site will be fantastic.

I'm really looking forward to this new history site Walt! I'm sure this will be a great resource for all of us to reminisce about our own CP memories and to learn a thing or two. Is anything in the works just yet? Can you spill any details? *** Edited 8/10/2004 5:27:49 PM UTC by DemonDroppin'***

The Amazement Park

Will you be able to link to it from Pointbuzz?
I have been going to Cedar Point ever since I was a kid. We have made to trip every year as a family. We still make a family trip every now even though we have long moved out of our parents house. The things I remember as a kid that I miss is the Fun House, King Arthur's court, and the ride that you stood against a wall that was spun then the floor would drop. Sorry I can't remember the name. I also miss the part of the sky ride that went over to the mine ride. They renovated it into a bathroom, so everytime I see it I wish that it was still a part of the sky ride.
Kid Arthur's Court was Great! That ride where the floor drops out was called The Rotor (Located across from Oceana). Its final season was 1984. The Frontier Lift was another awesome ride! It closed after the 1985 season. I remember you could see part of Boneville, the Western Cruise, and all of Frontiertown. I loved coming into the Frontiertown station and going over the Mine Ride!

We'll link to it from here. No details yet because there's really nothing to share. We've only talked big ideas - haven't really done any site planning.

Any specific memories from Kid Arthur's Court?
I have terrifying memories of my older brothers pushing my legs and arms through the climbing nets and telling me I'd fall through, great huh?

The Amazement Park

I remember having a great time climbing up to the top of the Kid Authur's net. Never got my legs stuck. Jumping in the colored plastic balls was always fun, when your a kid.
