Cedar Point and proposed parking tax

The city is charging the 8% tax on the WHOLE parking fee. 8% of $8.00 is 64 cents. 8% of $7.50 is 60 cents. It would be a good idea to change the parking fee to $1 or even 50 cents and have the toll more, but it won't work because they plan on taxing the parking fee and the causeway toll. :(

I don't want to think about the kind of lines we'll see at the tollbooths this year with them trying to make change for that extra $.64. If CP challenges this in court, and I hope they do, do they still have to collect the tax while it is going through the legal system?

Edit: Actualy stardoors, the article says they will only be taxing the $7.50 parking fee and not the $.50 causeway fee.

This has some legal challenges ahead ... but if they had to pay the tax, they would probably either eat it and keep parking at $7.50 ($7.50 + 50¢ = $8.00) or increase it to $7.87 ($7.87 + 50¢ + 63¢ tax = $9.00).

I think that they should list the prices on the signs on the causeway just like this.

$7.87 Parking Toll
$0.50 Causeway Toll
$0.63 Parking Tax imposed by the city of Sandusky.

Then a little note at the bottom saying "Cedar Point, where you go for thrills and where Sandusky goes for money"

I can see why Cedar Point would be upset about this tax since people could possibly turn away if they raise the price to say $9. But, I honestly think people will pay $8, $9, $10, or whatever the price is. If you split it up between a couple people in your car its not really that much. If you can't afford an extra $.64 maybe you shouldn't be at Cedar Point in the first place.

However, I don't agree with how they are being greedy and want to sponge of off Cedar Point. They need to get their act together and run the city correctly.

I am just throwing this out there to see what people think. If Cedar Point sues and there is a big problem stirred up between the Sandusky board and Cedar Point, do you think it could hurt thier relationship? What I mean is that the board approves almost anything the park submits. Do you think the board could get revenge and not approve rides in the future if Cedar Point wins a case against them? It may sound far fetched but i could see it happening since politicians are liable to try anything.

I don't agree with the tax. If Sandusky starts ransacking their cash cow, where will it end?

The town I live in has invented certain taxes and fees to help cope with the deficit. The most arcane law passed is the "fire hydrant rental" fee. Followed by a "wheel tax" on cars. It is, of course, to skirt the law enacted by the state government that limits the percentage of tax the city can impose on the residents.

I don't think Cedar Point wants to duck paying their fair share of taxes, but I think they are unfairly being singled out. Cedar Point guests and employees already generate alot of tax revenue by the amount of money spent locally in motels, bars and restaurants and shopping centers. I would be curious to see what the tax revenues look like after all the pointers go home for the season!

Go ahead Sandusky and slap the hand that feeds you. What a bunch of greedly bastards. .

I doubt that the city will be able to keep the tax imposed for very long. Unfortunately, legal action can take some time as Gemini stated, so for the time being, those without parking passes will have to deal with 64 cents. Where in the articles does it say that it's only taxing the parking fee and not the causeway toll? I read the articles and didn't see that part. Also, if it was just taxing the parking ($7.50) it would be a tax of 60 cents. The whole $8.00 would have to be taxed to get 64 cents. Not trying to cause trouble, but I just didn't see that part in the articles and the math doesn't add up! :)

I can't believe how greedy the city of Sandusky is. Must have been all of those mornings watching the cars roll in. Nothing like taking a bite out of the hand that feeds you. If it wasn't for CP the city would be lucky to be on the map.

Stardoors - make sure you're looking at the article from the 15th. It's in the news section.

Without upstops, airtime would have a whole new meaning!

I think that Cedar Point should just cut parking fees all together or tell people that gate admissions went up 8 dollars and collect it there. Then Sandusky wouldn't get their cash, lousy freeloaders

The gate fee wouldn't logically go up $8 to cover parking. Instead it would go up by (projected parking revenue/projected attendance) which would probably amount to about $2-$3 per ticket.

Since Cedar Point has already advertised that parking is $8 do you think they will just absorb the tax? Seems unfair now to raise the parking price.

It's in the tenth paragraph. Quoted from the article: "However, it appears the tax will be imposed only on $7.50 of the parking cost, because 50 cents is a toll to pay for maintenance of the Cedar Point Causeway, the city and park officials said."

I wish that would be true but I could see Cedar Point making the toll 8.50.

I wonder if CP will still pay for parking when you are staying at one of the resorts? That was always a nice feature.

It is also too bad that the one council member has the attitude that "if you don't want to pay the tax, don't go." I wonder if he would have a job if CP was not around.
