Causeway Bridge Compromised

Article from the Register. Apparently it couldn't hold the weight of a crane

The register is all over things today evidently. From the sounds of the article it wasn't anything major, but who knows. There's always the chaussee...

Good thing my 50 cent causeway fee is going toward keeping this extremely small section of road in tip-top shape. Oh wait . . .

It used to cost money to travel on the causeway?

"One source familiar with engineering aspects of bridges told the Register..."

Now THERE is some hard-hitting journalism.

You are charged a $.50 causeway toll when you visit CP. Its part of your parking toll. Even if you visit Bay Harbor in the off season, you are still charged the $.50 causeway toll but its refunded on your dinner bill.

The article raises the question of how they will get the heavy crane off site if the causeway is unsafe.

Answer: Place a boat from Shoot the Rapids under each of the wheels/tracks of the crane, float it out via the Marina. If it needs extra tug power they can borrow Pete's boat to do so.

The 200 ton crane has already been removed from The Point.

Yeah the fact that that part about not knowing how to get the crane off was kind of ridiculous, since it's already gone and even if it wasn't, they have the chausee. Typical small market newspaper carelessness.

Taking the Chausee is not an easy option for oversize loads. They would have to close the road completely to locals to get the crane through, and they probably still need to trim back trees to get through. Anyway they more likely than not could just drive the crane over the other side of the damaged four lane bridge on the causeway. It is very rare for the entire width of a short and wide span to get structurally compromised at the same time.

Clifford may have been the largest crane on site, but it also comes down in pieces that are pretty manageable. There were 2 of the "medium" sized cranes(the ones that lifted the MCBR) on site that could possible weigh more that one of the truck loads of Clifford parts. I think it easily could have been one of the yellow cranes that caused the issue.

No trees were harmed in the sending of this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

Will this have any effect on those of us traveling to Winter Chill Out?

I wouldn't assume so, considering only a single lane of the Causeway appears to be closed. Not the entire thing.

And worse case, you'd be directed up the Chausee.

So, the causeway needs a patch eh?

Patches are sometimes made out of cloth, and cloth can be sewn

Only if they give me season long free drinks at the bar.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

Is anyone able to correct the spelling? Compromised. Please.

Chris
