Buildings at Cedar Point

Someone could point them out a little better than I, but basically:

Number one is, I believe, merchandise. Where all the toys, novelties, etc are stored and distributed.

Number 2 is a few things. The building closest to the water tower is, I believe, wardrobe. The buildings that are parallel with each other, with the gray roofs, are one of the employee housing complexes. The rest is maintenance and other maintenance related things.

Number 3 is planning and design.

You're pretty right on Adam.

#1 houses cash control and (if I remember right) games or merchandise overstock.

#2 is a whole bunch of things. Wardrobe is closest to water tower and laundry department facilites are in that building too. Maintenance runs from behind Matterhorn along side of Corkscrew. The grey buildings are the Gold Dorms.

#3 is just what Adam said... Planning and Design

You know, once employee housing is improved (read, tear down cedars and gold)... there's no reason wardrobe can't move off point as well...

Odd thought, what about the maintenance building... how much of that could be moved to the off-point facility/moved to a smaller building elsewhere on-point. (like by planning and design) That's one very large patch of real-estate that could open up.

As much as it's nice to fantasize about moving everything that's not a ride, food, or games off point, at some point you'd have to consider that there's some things that are probably much more convenient to have there, in the park. I'm sure the costumed characters and show performers wouldn't appreciate wardrobe moving to the mainland, for example. Ditto for maintenance.

It's not Roller Coaster Tycoon, you just can't have a complete absence of support buildings in the park and expect things to work just as well.

Off site costuming works at Disney....

I always thought planning and design was in the Cedar Fair building that was built a couple of years ago. Learned something new today. :)

Wardrobe is primarily a giant ass laundry-mat for employee uniforms. You take in your uniform before or after your shift and they give you a clean one. Moving this by housing would make it alot more convenient for employees, especially if all housing is being moved off point (which is already in the plans, trust me cedars/gold is beyond saving)
Costuming for live shows is done backstage at each show. So moving it with employee housing actually makes quite a bit of sense.

Quite a bit of maintenance has been already moved across from castaway bay, so how much they need the current facility, really only someone in maintenance knows. They do need some facility on point, but moving it to another location on point and using a smaller, updated facility would probably go over well with those in maintenance.

Disney obivously has a hell of an advantage with their support tunnels (if you don't know what I'm talking about do a google search, it's amazing, the entire magic kingdom has a massive network of tunnels) and infrastructure that cedar point can never match, comparing the two just isn't fair.

^ I have a cool DVD from Magic Kingdom about that network of tunnels, they built them before the park in 1971. It's truly is like another city underneath the park. I never knew about it before I saw the movie.

**While we're on the topic of buildings at CP, there's FOUR I've also been stumped about myself (by the marina). There are 2 that are behind the Petcheck lodging and restrooms (1 is small rectangular and the other large one juts down toward the water. Marine use/any ideas? The other 2 are closeby. If you're looking at the front of Bay Harbor restaurant, it's a small building to the right. The other building in question is on my 2012 park map and is a small stand alone bldg between perimeter road (after leaving the marina entrance it's to the left before you get to the Marina gift shop/Famous Dave's (by the parking lot, across from red employee dorms) but...I don't remember seeing it when eating there this summer. Was that torn down/former bathrooms? (it's not the old guard shack BTW, but alot bigger). Any ideas would help. Thanks!

Costumes for Live E are washed at the same location as employee uniforms. I don't see why they don't have washer and dryers at the theaters, (probably plumbing issues) but I could see that making things easier for the dressers. Of course at the same time not all shows have dressers (Garter for one) so they would still need to be picked up and done somewhere else.

Moving wardrobe off point next to housing would be great for the employees living in housing, but for those who commute and live in town it would make it more difficult. Though if they took the building next to off-point parking and set it up as a laundry, with a drive through window for drop offs I would be all for it! :)

I think maintenance will be moving in the next few years. With the off point maintenance building and with what a smaller but modern shop can do I think they would be better off. I could see them moving back by Planning and Design or somewhere else on point. And when Golds is torn down, maintenance moved, and wardrobe moved across the street next to corporate (or elsewhere at the park) I can see them using that land for expansion. Tear out Corkscrew and you can place an entire midway of rides in that area (or one big coaster!)

*Note: the last paragraph is my own thoughts, I have NO inside information that ANYTHING will happen at ANY time. I don't even talk to the Lemon Chill Guy anymore :)*

There's a picnic shelter over there. That may be the smaller one you are asking about. The big building going toward the water is the Yacht Services building. There are giant garage doors on the front and back up the building that allows them to pull boats through.

The other building in question is on my 2012 park map and is a small stand alone bldg between perimeter road (after leaving the marina entrance it's to the left before you get to the Marina gift shop/Famous Dave's (by the parking lot, across from red employee dorms)

That one sounds to me like the Human Resorces building.

^ Those are my guesses too

^^ Thanks for that info. Any guesses to the building to the front right of Bay Harbor Restaurant? You can see it on the 2012 park map also. (a little rectangle), bathrooms? Any ideas?

Those are bathrooms.

The utilidor at Disney (the tunnels) are actually at ground level. Construction amounted to building those halls and other support areas and then covering them with the dirt/muck that was dredged for the making of the Seven Seas Lagoon. So, as you are walking through Disney you are actually walking on the 2nd floor of the complex.

It is most notable as you walk from the Ferry dock "up" to the turnstiles. But, it also explains why you have to walk "down" to the Jungle Cruise and to the attractions on the Rivers of America.

The other use of the laundry facility at CP, that wasn't mentioned, is that the laundry is where all the towels, sheets, etc for the hotels is washed. The hotels do not have their own industrial laundry facilities. (There is a separate laundry facility for Breakers Express behind that hotel).

So, even if the housing is moved completely off property it makes some sense to keep the laundry for the hotels close by. There is also some merit to keeping at least some of the maintenance facilities on the peninsula to avoid workers having to negotiate the causeway traffic.

"You can dream, create, design and build the most wonderful place in the world...but it requires people to make the dreams a reality."

-Walt Disney

How do you "negotiate" traffic? ;)

You would be surprised how little space maintenance has versus what it needs to do it's job on a daily basis. Hence the purchase of the property on Cleveland road to assist with winter overhaul.

Traffic, unfortunately, is frequently non-negotiable.

Why wouldn't Cedar Point just build a monorail to transport maintenance on and off the peninsula? ;)
