Brakes on drops

Does anyone know why there are brakes before you go into the turn around on magnum?

Someone help me i'm in denial about Project 2003.

If you've ever rode magnum on a hot summer day without them, you'll know why they are there.

Personally, I think that the turnaround is smoother without them, and the return trip is just insanely awesome! One of those rides, on a breezy night in the ejector seat is pure bliss.

Also, I think it's safe to say that the train didn't go anywhere near 70 mph, although it may have felt like it. Advertised as going 60 mph, I don't see it surpassing that by much, if at all...the law of physics just won't allow it.

I agree with you about the smoothness of the turnaround CP bound. I've been there so many times, in that awesome ejector seat. I always start yelling "No trims! We're flying!". Of course shortly after I'm laughing my butt off getting ejected all over the place during those perfect bunny hills!
I don't see why Magnum wouldn't still reach 72. The trims are right after the third hill, not the first, where it's speed should reach 72.

Now, Cedar Point is "Bulding for the future."
Coincidence?

Magnum does reach 72 mph, I was referring to Mantis.

Whenever there are no trims, it's always a pleasant surprise, and start going nuts yelling, "Not trims!" also. :)

They actually turn off the trims on occasion. Is this tru? If so tell me when because i will be there. When they changed Mean Streak in 1995 they gave it a fancy name. They called what they did to the poor coaster "Reprofiling." I think this made the ride lose its integrity all together, its just not nearly as good. They should call it "Streak" now because it certainly isn'y Mean anymore. Now Mantis same thing, turn those brakes off, they weren't there for a whole year, leave the rides alone. Now Wicked Twister has even fallen to the dreaded "Reprofiling." What's next Millenium Force and Raptor!

------------------
Wicked Twister is a great ride! Just because it looks simple soesn't mean it sucks! I wouldn't mind having it in my back yard!

Having brakes added to the drops, and being reprofiled are two different things. Generally, when a coaster is reprofiled, they change the angle on a drop, raise the drop higher off the ground (I/E Magnum's 3rd hill), or perform a major overhaul on the ride's design.

Magnum's trims are turned off when it's relatively cool out, when it's a bit breezy out, or even sometimes at night. This isn't a gaurantee, because there have been times when these conditions are present, and the trims still grab, but if you want a trimless ride, you should try in under these conditions...I recommend 1-3 for maximum enjoyment.

I am for every brake run at CP except for Mean Streak. Every other brake, IMO actually IMPROVES the rides, and makes them more thrilling. I've said it before, but a braked Mantis lets to "feel" more of the transitions, and Magnum brakes make you feel like you're gonna fall out on that turn around! Mean Streak, on the other hand is just plain boring, and the brakes make it even worse. Why do they have to "stop" the train on that brake run!
CP bound, 1-3 always! Many times I've been walking with friends towards MF when I'll hear Mantis go down the first hill and the trims weren't on. I always go running for its entrance, hoping that my friends will follow me(only a select few like Mantis).

I didn't realize that the trims had anything at all to do with the weather. Is that only with Magnum? Or does that include Mantis as well? I know on the last day of the season they weren't grabbing at all on both rides. I assumed it was an "End of the year bonus" or something. :)

CPcyclone, I believe I have read here before that the Mean Streak's trims have a lot to do with the weight of the train on the course before yours. If I'm wrong, please somebody correct me.

Magnum with no trims is insane. I love those trimless night rides. Mantis is extremely intense without the trims, but I enjoy getting a trimless ride once in a while, but not all the time.

As for MS, I caught one trimless ride this in the second seat of the front car. It was an insanely awesome ride! I literally felt like I was going to be thrown out on those boomerang turns, and the airtime was plentiful! When it comes to MS, I say get rid of those trims. It was a much smoother ride without them.

Ralph Wiggum, my buddy and I had a trimless(or at least extremely close to trimless)ride on MS just this past season. It totally caught us both by surprise. I remember us looking at eachother wide-eyed and screaming "Air! Air!" We were just so shocked that we were getting substantial airtime on MS. I'm partial to that ride. It's a great walk on most of the time, and it's easy on the eyes as well. :)
Toward the end of the season, the trims probably will not be turned on on Mean Streak or Mantis because of the cold weather. Cold = More Friction = Possible Rollback.

Watching Mantis fly through the first half of its course toward the end of the season when the trims were off made me sad because I had to work. Mantis kicks some serious booty with its trims off.

I find it ironic that I've never heard a single complaint about Appllo's Chariot trim on the first drop, yet so many complaints about Mantis and Mean Streak.
Well you do know that this is a Cedar Point website, and your supposed to talk about Cedar Point here.

Apollo has a trim on the first drop? That's news to me...

Mantis is great with the trims turned off. The g's are so high, it's hard to keep your eyelids open. I know a few people that have passed out because they are so forceful.
Passing out, that's a little extreme, don't ya think?
