Boating from here to there...

A friend and I are are toying with the idea of taking his boat across the drink to get to the point. I have a few questions.

Has anyone done this before?
Anyone know how long it would take to get from Detroit area to Sandusky Bay?
Are there slips available to the public at the marina?
Cost?
If there are no slips, can we drop anchor and sleep in the bay?

I could go to CP's website and try to get these answers, but I am looking for some first hand accounts instead of a letter that reads "Dear Mr. Gasper,
Thank you for your inquiry about Cedar Points water ways..... "

Yeah..

From marinas.cedarpoint.com, there are around 100 guest slips, and reservations are taken with at least 48 hours notice. Cost is $1.75 per foot (minimum of $50.00) up to $165 depending on boat length ... or $25 for a day dock.

I don't know how fast your boat goes, but it's about 70 miles, give or take, from Detroit to Cedar Point via Lake Erie.

I'd bet it would be a multi-hour trip, If not a day long adventure.

It probably would be cheaper to drive a car, but not as fun.

Either way, your destination would be the same... :)

MrScott that has to be the first post I've seen you have that does't have BOTH water and the new ride in it.

Well, he is talking about boating, which is on water.

And flume rides (which was removed) are like boats.

So he's still talking about water and the new ride.

It's programed into his brain. He looks out the window of his cabin at Lighthouse point and sees the new ride going over the swan boat pond with water jets shooting at the riders, it's a perfectly plausible idea. By the way MrScott that would be really cool to see.:)

Oh, MrScott. I forgot to tell you..

I was on the train yesterday at CP and saw the guy with the blueprints for the new ride and I wanted to jump out of the train and steal them so we could all settle this water thing.

Of course you will say...there is nothin to settle..

There was probably nothing more on those blueprints than details regarding the footer his team was pouring.

I wish it was my boat, not sure on the top speed of his machine. But I'm thinking we would more than likely run at a milder speed to conserve fuel. The ideal way to do this would be to make it a day trip.

Now, is that 70 miles following the shore line or shooting across? We could probably leave from somehwre further down the river or even farther off the lake.

Coastern3rd,

I have done CP by boat once and it was a blast. From the Top end of Lake St. Clair to CP it is about 90 miles so Mr. Scotts estimate of 70 miles is about right. The trip took about 4 hours (about 20-25 mph) each way and about 400 dollars worth of fuel round trip. Granted I am traveling on a 36' 1969 Chris Craft Seaskiff with twin 327-Q, so it is not the best on gas. If you could find out the cruise speed of the vessel and the GPH consumed at cruise speed you would be able to roughly determine your travel time as well as fuel cost.

I recommend traveling at cruise speed versus WOT, with the distance you are traveling the fuel savings far out weigh the minimal amount of time you will save on your trip. Also a GPS or chart plotter will help you get around the islands to the north of CP, but you must absolutely have an up to date map of the Detroit river as well as Lake Erie.

What I did was I got there the night before so all of my friends could utilize ERT. This also allowed us maximum time at the Point.

To add on to what David posted... I know several different people who boated from Metro Beach (16 mile road... north of Detroit). Everyone has always said it took 4 hours min. one way.

Does that mean you're paying 8 bucks for an hour's worth of internet? ;)

Boating to CP? Now that sounds like a FUN trip. I would love to do that sometime.

A boat trip to CP would be amazing, if I had the chance to do it no way I would pass that up.
