I was just curious as to what the main coaster was before Magnum was installed? What was the big talk about CP back before the 200ft monster?
There really wasn't much talk about CP, at least outside the region. The signature ride before 1989 was the Gemini.

I will leave for the point 7:30:00AM June 20, 2000
to me the ride to run to at the end of the night was the Gemini. It still is a fun ride to finish the day with, as long as both trains are running.
It's a glad thing Magnum was built and was such a success! Just imagine if they didn't build Magnum! We would probably still be getting our big time thrills on Jr. Gemini!
The Iron Dragon was built in 1987. Although a lame coaster by today's standards, I have heard that it had massive lines in its debut season.
Iron Dragon was actually considered scary when it was built. Like all the rest of the arrows it no longer has a wait over 15 minutes (on a normal day). Of course it has been reaching lines up to a half hour lately. Probably because it is so close to the Force.

The Gemini was always the most popular ride before the Magnum. I remember lines at closing time extending all the way to the Witches Wheel. It was an awesome ride in its' heyday and people really got into the racing!
Don't get me wrong, people STILL get into the racing. Also, Gemini is one of the highest capacity coasters around. Just figure, 20+ years after it was built, there is still a high-capacity crowd waiting for it. To me this is a sign of a classic coaster.

They call me cowboy- I'm the rider in black...
Cedar Point still had a nice variety of coasters pre-Magnum. 8 coasters which is still more then some parks can brag about today.

I don't think the Iron Dragin was ever considered exciting. I remember waiting in line for alomst 2 bours the first year it opened! When the train stopped on the final brakes, some riders where actually booing and telling the people in line that it's not worth the wait. So for me Gemini was always the main ride before Magnum.
Opening day it was quit a ride back then I only waited about one BOUR though.
