Find a GIF file, under 5k in size and no more than 90 pixels wide by 90 pixels high. You have to save it to your computer first and then upload it in the "My Account" section.
Most photo editing software will be able to resize and convert files to .GIF format. Mine was a pic I took with my digital camera of the TV screen, and resized and converted. In case you're wondering, that's Terry Gilliam from Monty Python (the Spanish Inquisition skit).

I have saved an image that I want to use as my avatar. It is a GIF file, it is 89 X 81 pixels and is only 1.35 kb. However, when I go to my account and select the image as my avatar and then submit, a message in red appears at the top of the page saying it must be a gif, max size of 90X90 and 5kb. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact it's all dark.
I found another thread where someone had asked the same question. Sorry to repeat a question that has already been asked. I tried saving an avatar already in use and then using it on my account and it worked fine, so it must be a problem with the image I'm trying to use. I'll just try to find a different one to use. Sorry again for the duplicate question.

I have a problem too.
I was uploading my Easter Avatar, and it gave me the error about it going over the limit. Well, it's not over the limit. It's EXACTLY 80x80, and 3.13KB. I can't even re-upload my Spring Image, yet it let me upload it before.
I have had this problem since I joined here a few years ago. I have tried numerous avatars, all well within spec, but get the same red message each time I submit. Even worse my last attempt showed up as the red X you see, and it will not delete. I read much more than I post here, so I gave up on trying to upload a new one.
Transferring from .jpg to .gif messes wtih my picture....could someone please tell me why?!?!??!
