Avalanche Run

I agree with Pete on Wicked Twister. I haven't ridden the GL Steel Venom, but I did ride the one at ValleyFair. It was good, but the brake kinda freaked me out because I didn't realize it was there. However, I think the twist on the back of WT, especially in those back couple seats, is just absolutely awesome and beats any effect the brake could have on my nerves.

As for best woodie, I haven't been on many, and while Mean Streak COULD be among the best, I rank Shivering Timbers as the tops of what I've ridden in that category. The biggest downfall of Mean Streak is the trims in the middle of the first hill. Instead of an out of control flying feeling, its more like an out of control magic fingers bed from a motel on rt. 2.

I like Disaster Transport. Its not the greatest coaster, but its still alright, if only to get out of the heat for a little while. It would be nice if they revamped the theming, or better, did away with the themeing in the ride and turned it completely pitch black.

Mr Scott, most times I've been to CP, the lines for WT have been 10-20 minutes, but there were days where the line was an hour or more. I guess it just depends when you catch it.

I rode V2 at SFGAm, but comparatively, I prefer WT over the straight spikes with brakes.

I agree Pete, but if a modern day insurance appraiser saw an old style Flying Turns he'd have a coronary. A free wheeling train with absolutely no control over it once it left the lift just wouldn't "fly" with the underwriters.

I disagree with that. Mack makes a bobsled coaster that is very similar to the Flying Turns - it's a train of small, inline-seated cars with plenty of S-curves and helices. Avalanche at PKD is one of these and it's a wonderful ride. There are several more in Europe and from what I hear they are even better.

Anyone know why they enclosed Avalanche Run?

I had read on here somewhere that the ride was enclosed because it was too loud when it was AR. It sounded like a thunderstorm approaching all the time. I can remember the lift being extremely loud as well. Another issue that resulted in "covering up" the ride was that it could not run in any wet weather condition and would have to "dry" before running again.

They still can't run it in the rain because the enclosure leaks.

Another reason I heard was that a lot of sand from beach would blow around and get caught in the trough. Add rain and you've got a nice mudslide.

I'm aware that Mack makes a modern version, and they do have a block system. They wouldn't have gotten a TUV certificate for it if it didn't. I was referring to the Bartlet designed Flying Turns.

Sounds like a great ride!

Sorry to bring this up, I don;t think anybody would, but if you want an Avalanche Run t-shirt, you can go to spreadshirt.com, and type roller coaster in the search bar, and one of the shirts is of Avalanche run.
