Then you're taking some kind of detour. I lived in Decatur for five years and my total round trip was just about 900 miles.
In fact, according to mapquest, by taking I-57 N up to I-80 and following that all the way over to Sandusky, the total distance is 396.7 miles (daggone it, I'm good!).
I used to go over to Indy, up I-69 and then some back roads (vs. the interstates) over to Findlay, then up to the Ohio turnpike. Probably shorter, but as much time? I don't remember. I made that trip three times in the late 80's/early 90's before moving back to PA.
At any rate, you could go to CP by way of Pittsburgh and still not have a 700 mile trip on your hands.
