I think also that the proximity of Cedar Point played a huge factor in their decision. Not in the conspiracy manner, but more the realization that they were competing with themselves.
If you think about it, how many people who live west of CP would bother driving 60+ miles further for a lesser park. The opposite is also true, someone living east of Geauga probably preferred to drive the extra 60+ miles to go to CP instead.
Like Walt and someone else mentioned in a different thread, they were pretty much doomed when the animals left. That combined with the wound Six Flags left just added up to a gaping wound that CF just couldn't heal. Or as someone mentioned above, decided just wasn't worth it.

I am only 20 minutes south from Cedar Point and I have been coming many times with my Season Passes I've had since 1987 through 2007, and I've loved this Park all through my life, and this is the only one I've gone in.
When I come in the Parking Lot I see many Licence Plates far west and south from Ohio.
When I am waiting in the Lines for the Coasters & Thrill Rides; I would tell the people where I'm from and how many times I've rode this Coaster or this Thrill Ride too. Then some people say they will get a Pass next yr, because I would tell them about my Journal and a few other things about my it; I started to right on 2001 through 2007.
I don't know if this Article is good to read and think to come to CEDAR POINT and, "WALK & RIDE" for the
BEST PARK of the WORLD!!
