Arcade auction

I had to take a trip to the back of the Arcade Friday night and get alot of last plays on some of the Pinball machines including Hercules. Yes, most of them were non-working. Took some neat pics including the Sega Turbo sitdown. It was totally dead back there. BTW, a neat little trick I discovered last night....the Abracadabra pinball machine can be played for FREE by hitting the button by the coin slot. Next time you're bored back there, that'll save you some dough.

Lemon chill guy told me today that the park's last full time arcade game attendant/mechanic may or may not have a job next year. Ohio gaming regulations are getting too stringent and already have impacted Cedar Point, and it will continue to get worse.

If the arcade continues, please keep the bowling game. I love bowling :)

As for the many games getting taken out, maybe a section of the arcade (near the back) could be transformed into an eating only area.

There are plenty of places to eat. How about a bunch of cots so we could take a couple hour nap? I would pay $5 for that to rest my feet to help power through for the late night closes. :)

There's that company in NYC that opened a space full of nap pods that you can pay an hourly rate to sleep in, and I think Casper Mattress has a store now, too. $25 for 45 minutes - but I know there other place discounts for longer naps.

I could see it working.

Nap pods aren't a bad idea at all, provided they are reasonably priced. It takes a lot to make it through a whole 10-12 hour day at the park without taking breaks.

I've also always thought nap pods on/near a college campus would be a hit for all the commuters who don't have an apartment or dorm.

Out of curiosity, how do they keep these things clean? The idea of napping in a pod that was just occupied by a sweaty CP patron on a 90-degree day in July doesn't sound that appealing. Haha. But don't get me wrong, I'm totally in agreement that it's nice to take breaks throughout the day at CP, and that sounds pretty interesting. Would they be included with FL+? ;)

Well the Casper pods are an actual twin Casper mattress with linens that get changed in between - I'm not sure about the other pods, but it looks similar. There's also one that's got a recliner with a vinyl upholstery that can be disinfected, but I don't know. Seems like it'd get even more sweaty in 90 degree/90% humidity

With people complaining about the price of locker rental, I can only imagine the endless b!thcing about the price of a nap pod. Still would be a cool idea.

If you get familiar with the park it's not impossible to find a nice patch of ground for a nap. Back when we used to be able to park behind Gemini I napped under the trees regularly while my kids read or played Gameboy after lunch. There are a few nice spots in the park. I've seen people lay out their beach towels or a light sheet and sleep in the patch of grass behind Scrambler before.

I think Dave & Busters is successful because it’s games WITH food and a bar with TVs playing the games on. Would love to have that to sit and cool off on extra hot days for a bit or to get out of the rain and I’m sure it would be popular for some people to take a break from their families (not me tho my family is perfect ;) ) it would no doubt make a killing in revenue.

There’s very little meat in these gym mats.

I suspect CP would say they already have deluxe nap pods available for guest use, they just like to charge $300/night for them. :)

Building codes come into play when someone is ‘sleeping’ on a commercial premise. There are fire ratings, here in Wisconsin went from 2hr to 4hr when the adopted IBCs went in effect, likely that in Ohio or possibly more stringent.

Restroom facilities and ADA requirements change as well when a building is no longer grandfathered from a change in coded use, in this case from an assembly hall to a mixed use.

This could be severely cost prohibitive from a ROI perspective.

I don't think anyone is *seriously* suggesting that they put in nap pods, really.

XS NightClub's avatar

I agree that it probably wasn’t a serious suggestion. Just throwing out there some of the decisions that have to be made from issues that arise when change of uses are made to structures, when people have wish lists or cool ideas.
I’m sure management has had lots of great ideas for uses of existing buildings or spaces that get shelved do to codes and costs.

Similarly throwing a restaurant in the arcade would also be a change of coded use and similar adjustments would be necessary. Such as a Dave and Busted suggestion from other thread.

Too bad they couldn't have restyled Witches Wheel into nap pods.

Don’t really need cots or nap pods. I can easily fall asleep in a Laz-E-Boy. It’s just a chair, shouldn’t need any stinking permits for a chair. Hell I started dozing off at a movie last year and the wife had to nudge me when I started sawing. :)

It’s just a place for Dad to sit down while the kids play some games. The fact it has a coin box attached to it shouldn’t make a difference. Right?

Last edited by Cargo Shorts,

My wife usually takes a nap during the day. I'll drink some beers back at the camper instead. Between the campground and the hotels there are already enough nap pods. I'd say rent a room at the Breakers if you need a nap pod. And your stay will be more enjoyable if you do a longer stay. Even if you don't stay at the hotel you probably drove a nap pod to the park.

A picture on CP rundown facebook was posted today of how there's hardly anything in the arcade now. I hope they put in newer style games for next season.

That picture was incredibly misleading. From where that photo was shot if you turn just slightly to the left you'll see just about everything is still there. Really the only thing missing is the back row of pinball machines. Everything to the left of the fixed tables in the back to the front of the arcade is still there.
