I stumbled across these on my search for the logo contest and I thought they were just grand.

Thought I'd share with those of you who might not have seen them before.

Those are some ominous pictures man. Why oh why couldn't that water spout hop on land and tear MS apart piece by piece???

Vanessa take that back! MS doesn't need a water spout to tear it apart, just shut off those trims and let it tear itself apart. ;)

hey, MS is a great ride..... without trims

I wonder how come I've never seen these pics before? Odd because I've seen a million, maybe not a million, different CP pictures. Do you know when that water spout was?

Smoking Marijuana isn't a bad thing or even a good one, like everything else, its what you make of it.

he has the date on his site, the bottom link is the whole site, just CP pictures, i believe it was June of 1998
My dad was at a bank near Cedar Point that day...he knew enough about waterspouts to realize they won't make landfall, but the bank tellers freaked out and tried to make everyone get in the vault.

I remember seeing video of a waterspout from 98 or 99 that was filmed accross the bay from the park. It was right next to where MF's lift would be today, and you could see PT and Magnum in the background. That was pretty freaky.

And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

Wow, I have never thought about something like that....wonder why I never heard that happened.

You guys must not have been around here for that long...we've seen them before.

I remember Cedar Point making it onto the ABC News on network TV with 2 or 3 of them swirling around the peninsula. I want to be be there when there are more.

My wife and I were in the park that day - June 30, 1998, I think. We were in line for the Power Tower when there was a big commotion, people pointing and yelling ... from where we (and most people) were, you had to assume it was a tornado, so we got the hell out of there, and bunkered in the employee cafeteria. I wonder if that would've held up ...

Anyway, it was interesting to see the reaction of the other patrons. Some ran screaming, others walked towards the funnel, cameras in hand - vying for a Darwin Award, no doubt. That one dissipated when it hit land, and a few others popped up, but no real damage. The weather that day was crazy to say the least - at one point, you could watch the clouds above you rotating faster and faster, a little funnel starting to drop, and then - poof! About a half hour after the 'spouts a vicious thunderstorm broke loose, and cleared most of the nasty stuff out - turned into a pretty nice night ...

Age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill.

Actually if it were to hit land, it wouldn't be a waterspount anymore. It would then be a tornado.

That would have been amazing to see. I would have loved to see that in real life. I'd probably have stood where I was and watched it. However at the time, I was just starting highschool and I didn't even know about CP. Great job on finding those pictures.

No, it would not have been a tornado. If the waterspout would have crossed land, it simply would have fallen apart. Waterspouts (or cold air funnels) and tornados are two seperate things. Waterspouts are not nearly as strong as tornados.

Well ... sort of. There are actually two different kinds of waterspouts: tornadic and fair weather. The cold air funnels you mention are common in the fall when the lake temperature is still warm, but the air is often cold. They are weak, rarely make landfall and fall apart when they do. They're fun to watch from a distance, but boaters should beware.

The Cedar Point waterspout of '98 was tornadic and it prompted a tornado warning for Erie County at the time from the National Weather Service. Although it was weak - as far as tornados go, it could have blown some debris around had it come ashore.

The cold air funnels are much more common. A possible waterspout sighting is one of many reasons to look forward to fall. :)

I was there that day with my school, it was insane. we were in line for Magnum and all of a sudden people this wall of people came running out of the queue at as. Then we looked up and saw one by Soak City. We all ended up having to ride home in a bus for 45 minutes soaking wet.
What are you, Walt? Some kind of meteorology major??? ;)

Those are cool shots. I now have the first pick as a background on my computer. It looks really good and it isn't a pic that you see every day.
