I think they put that break there in 1998, i'm not sure though. Anyone else?

I always remember it being there...not sure about the first season though. I'm not even sure why it is needed.

It was installed after its first season in 1997.

Gemini is right. They put it there becuase the ride is rather intense otherwise. It is extreem in the corkscrew and the mess back there otherwise. Quite a few members of the GP could'nt handle it.

That's right, they didn't have it during the first season, but it was there in '97. It does make for some nice hang time in the loop!

The brake on the first drop has absolutely nothing to do with the back half of the ride somewhatchewy. There is a block brake before all of that. That brake resembles very much the one on the upslope of the big camelback on Raging Bull... you kind of feel cheated when you hit it, like you know it was better at one time before the modification was made. Still great rides though.
It was the first loop and the incline loop that I remember being a little much for my legs, and I was even riding correctly then. I have noticed that the mid-course trims a lot less than it did the first season.

Yeah, but the brake isn't really noticable speed wise.. I mean, standing up at 60 MPH is the same as 55 MPH to me. :)
Let me say if the barke on the first hill of Mantis was not there I wouldn't ride it at all. I love Mantis now. Great airtime!
