Safe from field trips? Never. I'll just go with what I know here, but most schools in Michigan don't get out until the end of the second week in June. (But that's just Michigan.) Although, generally schools refrain from taking trips the last week or so of school because of finals, events, etc.
So, for the most part, you should be O.K.

A lot of schools are in session, but they still tend to bring in more and more students each year, so I would wing it. I live about 15 min away, so I just look at the webcam around 10 am so I know how busy it will be because usually everyone just shows up around opening time. If it is busy in the morning, I see if it is busy at night because most of the time if school kids are there, they would have either left around dinner time to go eat or at 8ish. Just make sure when you leave, you check the webcam on cedar point's official website to make sure if it is not busy or it is.

Hahahah - very good question. I was at the park on Friday, May 16 and expecting a very quiet day. It was quiet in the morning and then the field trippers started showing up. Cheers to them and their chaperones. All major rides had major wait times with the queues clogged with apathetic high schoolers from 9-4PM. But then, around 4PM the park was a completely different place.... The high schoolers were gone and the park was a free-for-all, or something close to that...It was a strange and beyond pleasant experience. From 4-closing (which was sadly 7PM) almost everything was a walk on... If you are a season pass holder, I highly suggest arriving late in the day and enjoying walk-ons to many rides....
My middle school goes during the last week of school, which is this week. Our last day is tomorrow. No more school until September as of 10:36am tomorrow! Hurray for finals being over!
What sucks about that though is that this year we have school that Friday, which kinda keeps from being able to go to Coaster Mania.
