A visit to the Point from Australia....

Well I am a Brit, and am also thinking about making my way across to the park=it looks amazing! I am thinking of going to Chicago and getting the train across, it stops in Sandusky. My only problem is that I, nor my girlfriend who I am going with drives, so I gather from Sandusky we'll have to get a taxi or something? Is there a taxi rank in sandusky station?

When you guys come to Ohio from overseas, please keep in mind that the US doesn't have mass transit like you guys do. Sure, we have Amtrak, but even that isn't like the rail network in Europe. Taxis in Sandusky probably aren't as common as you're used to either. In NYC, sure, but not in Ohio.

I'm not familiar with the Sandusky station, but I'm sure other people are which could help you out with your Taxi questions.

The Sandusky train station is very tiny. If I recall, they don't even have anyone who works there, it's just a waiting/drop off platform for the train. That said, you would have to call for a taxi, but I'm sure there's a pay phone around to at least do that.

And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

Actually, Halltd, I-77 is the highway by CAK, not Route 8. You'd simply drive up 77N until you got to the turnpike, and then take the turnpike to 57 in Lorain (edit-actually in Elyria), and hop on Route 2 there.

The exit on the turnpike is 145 (just for reference, I live in Elyria). When you get on Route 2 make sure you stay on it at the split after 3 miles (don't follow I-90 to back onto the turnpike).

Is it a walkable distant to the park hotels from the station or is that not really worth a punt? I could/should book a taxi, but obviously I won't have a taxi number to ring prior to getting to the station. Last thing I want to do is just catch a train from Chicago and jump off in Sandusky and leave myself virtually stranded-not really a wise decision.

here's a link to the station using google maps. their address is 1200 north depot street.

Here's a link to all of the taxi places in sandusky.

I would give them a call and see if you can reserve a car at a specific time. you should have a good idea of when your train is due in, and then the car will just be there waiting. it looks like you COULD walk, but i don't think it would be worth it.

Thanks for that little map. I have done a little research, and some of the hotels in the Sandusky, which are dirt cheap, do a shuttle bus to Cedar Point, so staying in the town of Sandusky would be fine by me. I would be able to ring for a taxi once I landed in Chicago I suppose, just get a taxi number and tell them what time I would arrive. What is Sandusky like-a nice place or a little rough?

Another quick question, is the park closed from October onwards?

halltd, if you're from Australia, you just jump on the nearest large animal that runs by - there's your transport!! (Taxis? Huh?!=)

I'm hoping to make a trek over to Australia within the next year, so I'll keep that in mine Sterlo!! :)

Sandusky is a plesent town, it not too big or very rough

Hey Sterlo, my girlfriend and I will be there that weekend also. We live near Pittsburgh, Pa. ( Home of the Super Bowl Champs Steelers ). It's a 2 1/2 hour drive and we are leaving that Friday after work. If you need anything I'm sure someone on here can help you. Like Mikeybo said, it would be nice to meet up with you. A few of us PointBuzzers had an opening day luncheon that went pretty well considering it was the first time and I think it would be great to have a closing year luncheon with you with us. Keep us posted on here as to your arrival, transports, etc. I'm sure Mikeybo's wife will make another beautiful cake...lol

Hey coasterking39,

Well that sounds very cool! I'd love to catch up with all you guys. Tentatively, unless plans change at this point, the plan is to fly in to either Akron/Cleveland at around at 4pm on Friday Oct 27, ready for the 6pm start. Then, I'll stay o/night on the park (somewhere, although I see I may have to book quick! Some of the rooms on the park are very dear I see!!) Then I'll do approximately a half day (maybe slightly more) on Sat Oct 28, til.. around 2pm. Then, it'll be trek back to the airport for a flight back to NYC late that afternoon.

Unfortunately that's about all the time I'll have given our itinerary is fairly tight. I just hope at least some of the great rides will be open (I know TTD will be a bit of a lottery.. but you never know=).

But yes, I'll definitely keep posting on the site chatting about things and will be in touch closer to the time!

Looking forward to it.

Andrew

Hey Sterlo, we just booked our room for that Friday til Sunday at the Clairion Inn in Sandusky. It is $71.00 dollars US a night and they have a game room and a in door heated pool and a lounge. That was the best we found for the price. Alot are booked up right now so you might want to book somewhere right away. If you should happen to book there, then my girlfriend and I would love to meet you there and take you on to CP. Let us know.
