8mm Cedar Point footage

Jason Hammond's avatar

Just FYI, the audio right now is only the camera noise, so you might as well mute it. I'll be swapping the audio later sometime.

Over the past year I have acquired several 8mm reels which include a few minutes each of Cedar Point. I finally got an 8mm projector. I started recording them last night. You will be able to find them here. I still have a few reels to go through. So, check back in the next few days. The one videos clearly shows the name of Cedar Point's kiddie coaster. We now know with certainty that it was called "Super Coaster."

One of the people I bought reels from thought all of the reels included Cedar Point footage. One of the reels that had park footage on it is almost certainly not Cedar Point. It it the one simply labeled 8mm Park footage. I think it might be (the now defunct) Erieview Park in Geneva, OH. The kiddie coaster in the video appears to be the same manufacture as the Brat. It even has the same number of cars on the train. Considering Brat opened in 1961, it fits with the vintage of the film. Even if it isn't Erieview Park, it's still likely a park in or near Ohio. The family lived in northern Ohio.

Awesome clips! I love the pictures of how the park use to look. Cars driving and parking on what is now the Main Midway. I have 2 reels but no way to play them, the projector I bought on ebay broke after 2 uses. It cost more to fix it then I paid for it. But thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed them

Thanks for posting. Seeing that brought some good memories of CP of old. Especially the double ferris wheel and pirate ride near the Blue Streak.

My dad has a lot of old 8mm movies. A couple of years ago, we dug his old projector out of his basement. Had to buy a new power cord for it. The projector worked perfectly for a few months but now misfeeds the film and is pretty much useless. My dad has been having a couple reels transferred to DVD every few months which works out well too.

I've gone through the last 3 reels. Only 2 had Cedar Point footage. They're posted now. Also, if anyone else has and 8mm of Cedar Point or Geauga Lake for that matter, but don't have a projector, I'd be happy to do a (basic) digital transfer for free in exchange for a copy of the park footage. Just PM me. I've just been recording the projections with my camera.

We have hours upon hours of old film from the mid-50's until the late 80's. If I was rich and famous, I'd get one of these.

My Uncle is converting some of the old family movies (like 30's and 40's). He just pointed his camera at the projector screen. The only problem is that he had to speed up the digital to get rid of the flicker from the film. Was really cool to see grandparents at my age.

And I don't think there was a single scene where there wasn't at least 1 cigarette and 1 glass of adult beverage.

Oh, and it was great seeing my dad as a toddler.

There was definitely a lot more smoking in the old movies. And kids riding bikes without helmets and playing lawn darts. How did we ever survive? :)

I'm still trying to find lawn darts, but no one will ship them to the US. :(

I'll end up having to make my own.

At one point, I think you could get them on Ebay. But not now. I have seen a couple of sites that claim to sell the parts to lawn darts indicating that they never sell fully assembled lawn darts. Not sure if they are legitimate businesses or sting operations looking to crack down on lawn dart lawlessness. LOL

Yeah, when I started looking into finding them, I found out how they got "outlawed". The UK on the otherhand still has them legal and hasn't seen a rash of child deaths due to poor supervision.

But that's the American way isn't it? I fail at supervising my child so it must have been an inanimate objects fault that something happened.

We had lawn darts. I'm sure my dad is shooting himself in the foot for having sold them at a yard sale (prior to having been outlawed).

Walt that setup looks pretty sweet. I found a few other machines that do similar things. They were all in the thousands. I'm happy with the $25 (that included shipping) I spent on a projector that will play Standard 8mm and Super 8mm film. The quality I'm getting from just filming the projection is good enough for me.

All I had to do to the projector when I got it was disassemble and clean the lens assemble. (I think it had 5 lenses in it) Every lens was filthy on both sides. I'm not sure how the interior ones got dirty. But, they did. Plus a plastic wheel that was supposed to engage the take-up-reel was broke into about 5 pieces. I just wrapped duct tape around where that wheel was until the diameter was enough to serve the same purpose. I love duct tape. :)

The projector route works just fine. Plus they also have units the work with existing video cameras.

My issue is more volume. I literally have hundreds of reels. And I saw the quality of the transfer that WBGU and Dan Feicht did for Cedar Point Memories. They had a nice setup.

Jason, you've got me intrigued by the non-CP footage.

I'd think it was Erieview, and still might - but it looks like the coaster in the video has 5 cars, whereas the Brat only has 4. I'm sitting here, staring, trying to figure it out. I thought it might be Chippewa, but that coaster is clearly not a Herschell. It doesn't have the flat track of the little dipper models.

Judging from the grassy midways, and what appears to be a lake beyond the trees, I think Erieview might be the correct assumption.

This picture of Brat has 5 cars.

Yessir, it does.

I'm fairly certain I remember a train running back there by the woods, too.

Looks to me in the picture that its just 4 cars with a high seat back in the last car. But its tough to tell.

by the way.. you can find lawn darts for sal all of the 'nt.. they are called jarts..

Jason Hammond's avatar

Jarts aren't lawn Darts. These are lawn darts.
