It was my first visit to Cedar Point. It was on a Thursday and we were staying in a cabin at nearby Lakeside. The Giant Wheel was new and I was excited to ride it. I also was excited as I new they had a double ferris wheel. Our fair had one a few years back and even though I was real young I got to go on it and I loved it. The park was huge. I had never seen so many rides.
I remember going on several rides but no coasters as the coaster bug didn't bite until a few years later. We rode the Cedar Downs, Scrambler and the Western Cruise boat ride. I did ride the Mill Race with my dad and it was only my second water ride. I rode the Gold Rush flume at Geauga Lake{new that year} in June.
We rode the Giant Wheel and they had a huge line. In 1972 the new wheel got as much press as some of the record breaking coasters that came later on. It was a lot of fun but the Sky Wheel was my favorite and my brother took me on it before we went back to Lakeside. That started a tradion in the 1970s of saving that ride until last.
There were only 4 coasters there The Blue Streak, Mine Ride, the old Wildcat and the new Jumbo Jet. I never did go on JJ as it was removed about the time I became tall enough to ride it. My dad and mom and brother went on it. It was a very popular ride of its day.
Cedar Point was and still is a fun part of summer. Glad I was able to go this year.
Nice story! I remember my first visit to cedar point. I was about 9 or 10 and we visited a day after we visited Sea World (now geauga lakes Wild Water Kingdom) My first ride ever at cedar point was Blue Streak. To this day I get at least one ride in on Blue Streak...
