2003 Changes

Vince982's avatar

I was reading the timeline and came across these couple of points for 2003 that made me curious...

• Corkscrew lawn reduced to make room for Grandstand Refreshments and new midway
• Troika relocated to Wicked Twister Midway to accommodate Top Thrill Dragster. The ride also receives a new color scheme.

What is/was the Corkscrew lawn? Anyone have a before and after shot of that?

Now I know Troika used to be back where Dragster's tower is, but what was its old colour scheme? Does anyone have pictures of Troika and Chaos when they were back there?

When you were exiting Corkscrew. The steps were rerouted which allowed the midway to be a little larger. There was a little larger grass in front of the station which isn't there anymore.

Chaos was the same color since it opened. The backdrop currently behind the ride is all that was new.

Troika was yellow with cars that were yellow, green, and pinkish/purple.

Here's one of Walt's photos of where Troika used to be.

So in that photo, why does the downside of TTD look like a death trap?

Was that some sort of promo photo?

Good call. That was probably just some bad editing.

That or the ride secretly breaks itself every now and then to give the riders another scare.

And you all thought it was a one trick pony.

Wow that's awesome to see. Thanks for posting that Gomez. Any other pictures would be appreciated.

I haven't found any pictures of the former Corkscrew lawn (though, you can kind of see it in pic #3 below), but I did upload some pictures of Troika in its old location.

Also, here are some old, low quality MidwayVision photos of the former area: 1 2 3

Walt, those still look better than my attempts at it.

Wow, I don't remember Chaos and Troika being on opposite sides of the midway. I guess I just never spent enough time out there in 02 and before.

They weren't .. It's just the way that picture is displayed.

Walt were the first 2 images taken before 1989 I couldn't find magnum. I know there are a lot of trees but i dont even see where the line would be.

Yeah new year, and finally got my license, well back in august. Im in need of a trip to the park.

There were a lot of trees. In those night shots(at least, I assume you're talking about Walts pictures) you can see the lift of Magnum light up in the background.

I don't have dates for all of them. Some could have been as early as 1993, but not before then.

Yup the very first picture shows the Magnum hill lit up through the trees. Man, I love seeing old pictures of the park. This is my first time seeing that area of the park before Dragster.

Wow! You mean Cedar Point once had trees????? No, I love Dragster but I sure loved that area of the park before Dragster too.

I loved that area when it was Troika/Chaos. Some of my favoritee times were working the Troika/Chaos/Super Himalaya triangle. Workign Chaso back then was fun but in the summer it was like working on the surface of the sun at times and then you got over to Troika which was nice and cool and shaded.

Don't anger the Potato People.

Y'all ready for some serious sidewindin' in 2007?

Mean Streak 03

Those were the days.

ID was the only thing that was hurt by the tree removal. TTD improves the look of the area so much.

TTD is an eye-sore on the area. I definitely prefer the feel of that area pre-2003.

That's untrue. There are many people who I have seen on these boards say 'I don't like Mean Streak, but it is a marvelous structure to look at'

I got a post card off ebay and its a picture taken from Space Spiral looking back. I'm going to guess it dates back to the mid 60s - mid 70s or so because Sky Ride is there but Corkscrew isn't. I have a picture that I took this summer and it is the same view. It is absolutely amazing how different everything it. In the postcard you look back and see some concrete around the Sky Ride station and then beyond that is green, and that's it. In the picture I took you see several structures on the skyline and minimal green. I just can't get over how many trees are there.
